hiya folks...so new to this i cud almost be virginal again :)
got my 1st corn about 3weeks ago and so far he's still in the baby proof plastic tank that came with it as a kit...i also bought a 3' viv for when hes a bit bigger along with all the usual gubbins one needs for housin..... at mo he's feeding ok...every 3/4 days on pinkies...but my main concern is he's ALWAYS under the plastic water dish that came with it...when i put him back into the tank after handling i aim him towards some wood bark over the heat mat but without fail he returns to the water bowl again, hence everytme i pick him up he's always cold..is this normal???

,Same snake 2yrs apart :)

Im not entirly sure but you could be feeding him too often, try every 5days. Make sure your temps on the warm side are at 30*C, measured with a digital thermometer with a probe. It could be too hot in their so he's going to the coldest part, other than the water its self i imagine just under the bowl would be very cool.

Its possible that after only 3 weeks your corn could still be a little stressed & settling in to their new home.

Wait for a more experienced owner to reply, they will probaly be able to help you more.

I would be feeding it every 5 days. How are you controling or measuring the temperature? If you have a thermostat (which you need), drop the temp on the warm side to 28*C. Its likely he doesnt feel secure in the warm hide, how big is the hide compared to the snake? And how open is it?

Ah ok. Basicaly all starter kits are sold without a thermostat, which is a vital peice of kit. Its stops the heat mat over heating and causing serious injury to the snake. You can pick up a Habistat mat stat for £25. You will also need a thermometer to check the temperature (can you remove the one from the 3ft viv?).

This will show you how to put pic's up:

The wood looks a bit open, which is why he wont go in there. Screw up a few peices of newspaper and put the balls near and around the wood. It will make him feel more secure and he will still be able to move them.

without a thermostat the heatmat could get to over 40*C, which would basically cook your poor little snake!! you can pick up a stat for as little as £20 new for a basic on/off 100w model or have a look on ebay. there are different types and they can cost a lot more for an 'all singing all dancing' one but a basic matstat is all you need
GOOD starter kits come with a stat, unfortunately many don't

lets be honest, thats just a doggie bowl they`ve given you, it also looks like the only place to go on the cold side, i`d get a proper hide - cave, log, ect and a smaller dish for the water, it doesnt need to be that big.

You can make your own hides to any size you think your corn will need, just cut some polystryn to the shape of a little cave, give it 3 coats of slightly watery plaster then paint it with some non-toxic, water resistant paint... i find pond paint works well. & if you dont have plaster & paint, visit this link http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3138 and you can make one with random things from the kitchen cupboard.

I'd also have to agree with solid, thats gotta be a doggie bowl right there :)

You need a thermostat as soon as you can get one otherwise your snakie WILL die when your heatmat DOES over heat... which it WILL!

Sorry guys, unless Im over looking something I cant see whats wrong with the water bowl. It doubles up as a hide and is too big to topple. Cant really see any problems.

The shop is stupid not saying you dont need a stat. That mat is very capeable of reaching 45*C+. You will need one regardless of the size of the mat.

yes the water dish DOES need to be that big, it's absolutely fine, i use dog water bowls, damn site cheaper than branded stuff!
you DON'T have to spend a fortune on flash stuff with the 'right' logo, improvise or make your own!

As GP said, it makes no differance that its a dogs water bowl and not a E.Terra bowl that costs a tenner.
