Okay, I just got a new viv and stuff for Astra since she's passed the 2ft mark now, and I've just been putting it together, and on a hunch, I took her out and let her have an inquisitive peek at the bulb guard on it's own. She went right through it but got stuck at a point and started flailing around before I managed to slowly guide her backwards and unstick her. I returned her to her faun whilst I ponder this. I'm thinking could I cover the guard in cling film or would this soak up too much of the heat from the red 100W heat bulb? |

If you covered it in cling film it would melt.. |

Damn, you're right >.< What should I do? =(
EDIT: And I just realised that the guard itself is getting quite hot. Not hot enough to burn me, but it might be hot enough to burn my corn ... Damn >.< Any ideas? I totally didn't see this coming.

Well if she can get through the holes in the guard, the guard is pointless. How about getting a guard designed for ceramics? The holes are smaller in many of them.
Also, once the bulb has got the viv up to temperature, the guard should cool down as the bulb is doing less work. (I assume its on a dimmer stat?) |

Mine actually gets a little hot, but I'm lucky that he rarely ever climbs up that end at night; and never even goes climbing in the hot end during the day. (But I only have a 60w bulb; not 100w) Because I have the right temps, I haven't got a dimmer stat (But I'm hoping to pick one up at an expo in a few days ;p)
Don't give her anything to climb around by the bulb? It'll most likely be less dangerous for her to quickly touch the mildly hot guard then the really hot bulb.. I don't really know what else to suggest, other then trying to find a new guard..

Yeah, it's on a dimmer stat, and you're right, the guard isn't nearly as hot anymore. I went to my local reptile shop, but they didn't have any of the smaller hole-ed guards in >.< And whilst I could make the hot end flat, she'd still probably find a way to get to it.. >.<

I would suggest soldering it but the holes would still be too big and i dont think soldering is good for it as its built for small fiddly things but you can try. Or just turn the light of all together as lighting is really essential aslong as the hot end has a mat under it then its okay.
