Hi,
my corn snake is about 2.5-3 years old and im pretty sure its a male as the last 2 years, hes been going mad in the tank about this time of year which i understand is breeding season. i was wondering a few things....

1)is it safe / advisable / not advisable to handle him in this time as he seems really anxcious....

2) his last shead, about a week ago is just over 5 foot long... how big should his tank be? im told so many different sizes, its hard to know whats right....

3) he has a fleshy lump on his side. its been there a long time but he never seems bothered by it.... should i be?

4) he has a heatmat, but no light.. is that ok?

5) how often should i feed him and how big should the mice be? im worried the mice are too big or too small and dont want to over / under feed him...
many thanks for any advise. just want to make sure im keeping him happy.

1. It's different with each animal, but probably fine.
2. You can take at least 10% off the length of a shed as it stretches as it comes off, but even at 5' it would be fin in a 3' x 2' viv.
3. Yes, get it checked out by a specialist Reptile Vet.
4. Yes.
5. Feed roughly the girth of the snake, at that sort of size/age, probably an XL mouse every 10-14 days.

hi,

thanks for that. just one question. the dimensions of the tank you recommend seem odd. you say 2' depth? thats too big for our flat and ive never seen a tank with that kind of dimension? my tank is : 30" x 13" x 13". i take it thats too small? if i get a bigger tank, it would have to be longer obviously. it can be taller if need be as well, but not sure depth i can really extend much more than what i already have.

is the heatmat controlled by a thermostat? if not then it should be as unregulated heatmats can reach excessive temperatures... and the width + length of the tank should be roughly equal to the length of the snake...

As Jono says, so in your viv, 30 + 13 = 43" of snake (its just a rule of thumb for the minimum size).

oooh! really need a stat, you can pick them up secondhand or new from around £20.
they control the temperature the heatmat gets to, when it gets to the upper set limit it switches off, then when it cools down it switches back on again. uncontrolled heat sources can reach pretty high temperatures. this is potentially harmful to your snake as they don't sense heat like we do and therefore don't move away immediately they touch something too hot.

I'm assuming heat mat is only under a portion of the tank? Roughly how deep is the substrate, and what is it?
