Hey there Su, beautiful snake, loving her name ^_^. The tip of her tail does look sore, i would get her to the reptile vet nearest you as soon as you can just to have them check it out. & Your dilema about which to choose a beared dragon or a corn snake i'd probaly go with the corn, i have a breadie & a corn & if i had to get another i'd get another corn snake. Bearded dragons are cool pets & there pretty funny but hey cost a lot more to feed & heat than a corn does(at least mine anyway he's a little piggy when it comes to feeding).

Didn't read the 2nd page of posts before i posted lol, sorry!

I think that energy saving bulbs give off UV & im not sure but I THINK that it could be bad for your snake if left on for to many hours aday. I heard some where someone went to sleep with a energy efficiant bulb on next to their bed and they work up in the morning with a burnt face! But as i said im not sure if its bad for snakes or not. If you need lighting theres always the option of LED lighting, i have blue LED lighting in my corns viv for the night time just so we can see what shes doing, i got them for around £20 & they are more than bright enough in my 2ft x 1ft x 1ft vivarium & will probaly be enough when i expand to a 3ft x 1ft x 1ft. I can post a link for you if you are intrested.

Thanks Markus we called her fred cos I was originallt gonna get 2 and call the other one perry (my eldest daughters suggestion!) After a bit of thought I figured I didnt have the room for 2 full size viv's, and didnt want and still dont want to keep 2 together. Now though I have it sussed I just need to get rid of my sofa and there goes the problem! May very well end up with both another snake and a beardie!

Yeah I was reading that too about the energy bulbs, theres been quite a bit of discussion on here about it! Its on a timer for 12 hrs but she seems to spend all of her time hidden which she didnt used to do! I think maybe she is bored or hibernating as my pet shop said, She used to get pretty nosy when it was nearly feeding time but not anymore?

A thermostat is an essential item for keeping any reptiles. Please, please get one asap!

If a heat mat fails, which they can do, your snake could very easily suffer quite serious burns.

I reckon an 11"x11" is probably the best size mat for a 3ft viv. You should aim to cover about 1/3 of the floor area.

Hi Susan, heat mats can not only cause serious problems, but unstatted they very quickly reach temps of 110+

Depending on the size of your viv, i would say you dont need a bigger heat mat, it only needs to cover a third of the viv area.

Does that light give off heat? what temps was she being kept at when your thermometers were working? I am guessing that she may be to warm, and dry that could have possibly caused her to not shed properly.

I keep my corn on the advice of her previous keeper at hot end temps of 80-85 and cool end is around 70-75

If she has natural light in her viv i did not think you need anything else...the only light i have in my viv is a infrared heat bulb (housed inside a bulb guard on a dimmer stat) as this is invisible to the eye so does not bother the snake.

She does have natural light in there - she is on the wall opposite the window. Do you think I should take the light out?

Hi Wolfspirit,
She is in a 3ft viv, with a smallish mat at one end which I will replace with a bigger and a mat stat, and an energy saving bulb for light, which maybe she doesnt need? Will post a pic of setup then you can get an idea - at the mo she has a shoebox for a hide as she has outgrown her last cave!

As Budaholic said an 11x11 would be fine, what is the wattage of the bulb? does it give off much heat?

More importantly is she in direct sunlight? if she is then you need to move her viv away from the sunlight, as the sun will make her viv hot.

yeah she is pretty much directly in front of a large window, bugger am worried now feels like i have it all wrong for her! Though i do have venetian blinds which are angled so the sun isnt coming directly at the tank, and I have the windows open so it doesnt get too hot in the living room?

Hi Susan, so long as she is not getting the sun directly on her viv she should be ok.

My royal and my corns are in natural light but the sun does not come in through the window it is always in the shade.

Looking at your set up i would not think that it would be to hot either, but you still need to get a stat for the heat mat and maybe try her on an infrared light, so you can see her , but she does not see the light, if you do get an infrared you will need a bulb guard and a dimmer stat to run it.

The tail could be as a result from a burn to it which could have made her lose the skin..but i am not sure, maybe someone else on here could answer that...either GP or BE.

There is a very good caresheet on this forum for corns, go here
http://thecornsnake.co.uk/corn_snake_care_sheet.htm

That will help you.

Ill start off by saying your vivarium looks very nice :)

I personaly would remove the bulb straight away and replace it with a matstat. http://www.petzoo.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=92&products_id=707 i use one of these, theres one that does 100w heat mats and one that does 300w heating equipment, the 100w would work on your heatmat, i think heatmats are only around 25w they are really cheap and put your mind at ease about if your snake is getting to hot or cold.

This is what i use for lighting.

Its just 4 blue LEDs that plug into the mains, If your snake is in natural light(not direct from the sun) you shouldn't need any lighting during the day.

Heres a picture on a night to show how bright they are :)

This lighting set up only cost me around £22 but you can get the set up with 3LED bulbs for around £17 then one extra blub cost me around £4 or £5.
Sorry couldn't remember the link i bought mine from but this is what i have been using. http://www.reptilecentre.com/p4008371.htm Just shop around and im sure you can find things cheaper than the links i've posted, these are just the first ones i found with the pictures :)

Hope this helps you out a little :)

Susan, just had a thought, where is your heat mat? is it under the light?

They need to be the same side so as to give the snake a warm and cool end...

Hi thanks for all the help its been a big help. Heat mat is being replaced with an 11x11, which has been ordered today along with a mat stat (100w), and is under the light,I have a shoebox and damp moss for her hide there, so I think that should be ok. A query I have is this - when I remove the light from her tank will I be safe lol - at the minute if I go in there when the light is off she rattles her tail at me! The blue led's look fantastic so will definitely get more of them. I have put a plastic plantpot in there today with artificial plant for reptiles, in the cool end, mybe if i busy her tank up a bit she may be a little more adventurous!

These are some pix of her feeding - I let her go an extra couple of days since her last feed and she was ready for it. She took it gently though, usually she strikes pretty fast! Am hoping someone with a bit of knowledge will be able to ease my mind about the ridge down her back - its not very clear in the pic, but I'm concerned that it may be dehydration cos I never see her drink and her water doesnt go down much. Then again it could just be muscle which is what I am hoping!!!

This one is where you can see the ridge I am worried about, any help greatly appreciated!
