i am thinking of putting a energy saving bulb in the viv with a guard and heat mat with a mat stat, will i need the energy saving bulb hooked up to my dimmer stat?

also what size of heat mat would i need for a 3ft viv?

Nah energy saving bulbs kick out naff all heat really (i have on in with my geckos), as long as there is a guard over it and the Mat is on a stat you'll be fine. think you'd be looking at 11"x15" mat for a 3 ft viv.

I wouldn't bother with a stat or guard for an engery saving bulb either.

but what do you think with this setup? better or worse that just having a red bulb on 24/7? or is it cheaper to run a energy bulb on 12 hrs and a mat on 24hrs?

You dont have to run the bulb if you dont want to. Natural light will be fine and you can just run the mat n' stat.
