I've had my corn (Rizla) for about two years and have always used aspen. Was thinking of changing to shredded paper. I am going to try half the tank first. Is this a good idea? |

This is an interesting subject. For my Masters thesis I am studying enrichment for reptiles and it has been shown that the occasional changing of substrate is a good source of enrichment. Both aspen and paper bedding are suitable so I can't see how it would be a problem in that respect.

Especially as a lot of offices will let you have their shredded paper for nothing, because then it doesn't cost them for removal either.
I've been trying to get some info on straw, because it's what their natural habitat would basically be, but is there health issues to that one? Anyone know?? |

I'm using coconut fibre at the moment which is working well. Absorbs any liquids with ease, cheap to buy and easy to get hold of. Looks very natural as well. |

I know some straw can be dusty and it can carry mites but whether they would be snake mites is beyond me |

Well the shredded paper has been in for a day now and Rizla seems to love it. He's spent most of his time burrowing through it and hiding under it. This may just be that its new, only time will tell. At the moment he seems to prefer the parts of the viv with paper to the bits with Aspen. I'll keep you posted. |

straw - great for horses but could be problematic for reptiles?
it fluffs up incredibly well due to the straw length it's a good insulator due to all the air spaces when it's fluffed up it can be very dusty
so basically it's hard to get a thin layer of substrate over the heatmat, too thick a layer and the heat won't get through and it could cause respiratory problems. |

Would any shredded paper be safe for reptiles?
I could shred old newspapers, but what about stuff I've printed out from the PC - would the inks be safe? Or glossy pages - they wouldn't be as absorbent I suppose... |

Before i used office paper, i used to get paper from a chippy up the road. They'd sell me a big wadge of the paper they use to wrap chips for a few quid. That stuff was excellent when it went through a shredder. |

I've changed back to Aspen at the moment, (Having aquired a sack of Aspen free). I've noticed that he's been less active since. in shredded paper he liked to tunnel a lot. Now he's more inclined to lay still a lot more. I'm going to monitor him for a month and see how he is. |
