hey all, just wondered whether snakes have a tendency to catch illnesses from human. im talking colds, flus etc etc. whenever im ill ive been warrying of handling mystery incase i pass things on. can anyone clear things up?

Not as far as I know because we have a totally different biological set-up to that of reptiles. Most of the decomposition studies that I have looked at have only really used mammals. We use 50lb whole pigs/pig parts for our studies due to the similarities between us and them. Gut fauna, etc.

However, bacteria and viruses are incredibly adaptable due to the large quantity of generations that can occur in a relatively short period of time.

Mancunian may know more from the human perspective.

I was thinking about posting exactly this question, because I have a bit of a cold at the mo, I don't want to affect either of my snakes.

I've always heard that they can in some cases or that there is always the possiblity so I never handle my snakes when flued up, especially as snakes are prone to respiratory problems anyway.

Im guessing if stuff like bird flu can hop to humans, why can't human viruses hop to other animals?
