| hi, i hav an 8 yr old corn snake called "kellogs" he's being seen by a vet but am curious if anyone else has had this prob for the last 5 months he is sick 3-4 days after feeding x ray has shown no blockage |

| hi thanks, the only thing i can think of is his diet use to be rats and was changed to mice but that was several months before he started being sick |

| i'v had him since he was a yearling, vet has said if we can't sort it soon he's got to be put down i'v managed to find another source of rats thought it was worth trying he was on anti sickness medicine last week and kept his food down but has sicked up food this week |

| Good luck with the rats, although if I'm honest, I can't see that being the cause. Is your vets a reptile specialist? - If not, it might be worth a second opinion. |

| no i don't think it'll make any diference either but worth a try. yes vet is a reptile specialist, i hav another question for u my vet has asked me to rehouse a young corn snake and says it should be ok to keep the 2 snakes in together? |

And you're sure its a reptile specialist? - This sounds like terrible advice.
For a start you have a sick snake and even healthy looking ones should be quarantined ideally.
The size difference between an adult and a young snake is a worry, the larger one will get all the best basking spots etc, before you even go into it getting hungry and deciding the youngster looks like a perfectly shaped snake snack.
If they are different sexes they may well breed and if the smaller one is not up to size it may be dangerous. |

I also think that the advise given by that vet is rubbish for all the reasons stated by BE. If it was me I wouldn't rehome the snake(as much as i would of liked to) if it can be helped due to the risk of passing anything on to it.
I would also try and get a second vets opinion. |

| thanks for advice i was bit concerned bout putting them in together but vet said it is fine he is the only vet round here that does reptiles he wants to do a barium (think thats how u spell it lol) x ray on kellogs see how the dye passes through him |

Barium x-rays are good, but the problem is getting it into him.
Normally a 'barium meal' for stomach to bowel x-ray, or injection for blood flow. But i don't know how quickly the meal would go through a snake, it may have to be fluid.

have you checked all your temps - hot and cold ends? i know it sounds obvious but mats and stats can go faulty and accuracy may be 'off'. as ambient temps have dropped, particularly overnight, how cold could he be getting? although it's an adult snake how long have you had him?
i also agree that asking to rehome a baby corn with a sick adult corn is pure stupidity! |

| hi yes i have checked temp and the thermostat is working light is dulling down etc when temp is reached he has a heat pad on at night and bulb during the day hide at each end of viv with basking spots although recently he spends most of his time under his water bowl. i'v had him for 7 yrs with no probs till now and its always the 3rd or 4th day frm feeding that he's bringing up the food geting quite worried now as he's gone quite skinny |

| hi my ex brought up his temp probe and checked it for me and said it was ok the thermostat is set to 25 and thats cutting in n out |

| ok thanks i'll turn it up see if it makes any diference he's going to vets tomorrow will tell them i won't have the young corn as i don't have a spare viv anymore and don't want to risk putting them in together. think it'll be another week of getting medicine down him... costing me a fortune but he's worth it |

30*C is ideal for the hot end, however if you're providing a basking ligh at both ends of the viv you'll not get a temperature gradient warm--->cold which may be why he's favouring his water bowl to cool down?

| hi, there is only one bulb in the viv, thats on during the day then heat pad in other end which is on at night i use to hav the water bowl under the light with a log/hide the other side but changed it round last week so log is under light no matter where the water goes he goes under it i was wondering if it was the temp but it's always been like that and he's only started this past 6 months |

| thanks to everone who's replied the update is... i'v just got back from the vets they wanted to keep him in and do a barrium x ray see what that shows then have medicine for a week to get a poo sample to be sent away which will cost £60 i couldn't afford the barrium x ray(£80) this side of xmas so opted for 2 weeks of medicine (metoclopramide) so i can get some food into him and then take a poo sample in to be sent away for analasis which including medicine and visit today is still gonna cost me £80!! but am hoping that will show up something. vet did say if nothing comes back it looks like gut disease or a cancer in gut. |

:s Oh dear, I hope things come back ok!
Hopefully turning up the heat will help, however the effects wont be noticible as he will be stressed from all the vet visits. |
