                      | Corn snakes are the best starter snake you can get. Really easy to care for, grow to a manageable size and are really tame. £15 is a good price for one too.
The size of the viv depends on the size of the snake, but a baby can be kept in a £4.99 terrarium from Wilkos or even a plastic sandwich box with air holes in.

There's a care sheet on the site that will give you a lot of info, but please ask more questions. We like questions

                      | I have heard about the shoe box vivs but i really want to be prepared for when the snake grows
Say the snake ggrew to 4.5 feet
what size viv should i be looking at?
also should the baby be housed in a small viv or can it be put straight into the larger one?

                      | Hi Rob, its advisable to start in a small viv for the snake to feel secure and comfortable.

                      | Ideally they should be kept in something fairly small first off.... If you have a wilkinsons by you, they sell a vivarium/aquarium type thing for £4.99 which is really good value and quite suitable.
Generally most people on here will tell you that the length of front of viv, plus length of one side of viv should equal the length of the snake.

If you want to think about getting a larger viv, I think most people would say get one at least 3 feet long. You could then fill it with loads of hides and branches so that if you did try the snake in there whilst it was young, he would have plenty around him, so as not to feel overly agoraphobic. Otherwise, you could section a part of it off and move the section as the snake grows.

I would still get a small viv from Wilkies though - they are really useful for a number of reasons (I have used ours to put our 4' corn in to take to vets etc). Or if not this, then get a rub (really useful box)... various other posts in here somewhere that tells you what type and where to get them from.

I'm sure others will be along to offer advise soon also...

 Happy new snakie!!

                      | Just take him to a rep shop and let him hold one- he'll realise they aren't that bad after 5 minutes of handling |

Is there any arguement that is getting used against you? There is always good enough responses somewhere, it's just knowing what you're up against.

                      | pffft, there's always room. A small shelf above a TV, A large drawer removed from a chest.
If it's only a small one, then it wont need anything bigger than the average salad drawer out of a fridge.

I live in a small flat, i have 3 snakes, 4 ducks, 2 turtles, a tree frog, tropical fish tank, a cat and giant snails.

Not to mention 2 teenage girls as well, they make more mess in a day than my animals do in a week!!

Quick edit, just remembered, i've got a beardie too.

                      | Garter snake maybe, they are nice and little. The easiest way to get a corn or something, if you're really keen, is to just keep the research up.
Eventually your parents will both see how serious you are because of the info that you're getting.
Also, any questions just ask. Sometimes you may think that some questions might seem a little daft, but ask them.
We like any questions because it stops our heads turning off. In fact, i still ask questions as well, so you will never stop learning either.

                      | are garters generally a bit quick? i wanted one initially when i went to the petshop but got talked into getting a corn by the staff there. glad i did in hindsight though, Birch is one of my favourites <3 |

                      | Dunno if they are. I used to have a pair of garters, and I wouldn't have said they were quicker than a corn of the same size/age. Again, i suppose a lot of it is down to how skittish they are.
