I have always used a heat mat in my viv but I have recently acquired 2 more corns and a viv and it as only got a heat lamp which the pet shop recommended to the people i got the snakes off. I was just wondering what everybody else uses and prefers, personally i don`t like lamps as it feels too hot and the potential harm to the snake is high.( the one i inherited didn`t have a guard) |

mats! I do the same as Saddleninja -only have energy saving bulbs in with the corns because they don't need the extra heat if they've got mats |

I use an underfloor heat mat, attached to a thermostat, but have a low energy (9W) lamp purely for cosmetic purposes which I rarely turn on. |

I got told to run a heat lamp during the day then switch to heat mat at night, my viv is around 75-80'c during the day and 65-70 at night, does this sound ok? Harry seems happy enough.
Also I dont have the mat on the floor i have it on the back wall at one end |

i would just stick to a heat mat and that will be fine. the person who advised you to use a lamp, were they by any chance trying to sell you one |

Stick with what everyone else is saying, A heat mat is ample for the average person, I do have a lamp in my Viv's, but only for decorative purposes really, especially if you've got a wood viv, with glass front, then it can be dark in there when you want to see them. I've actually got my lamps in my tanks, rigged into an old aquarium timer, so all the lamps turn on at 9am, then off at 7pm. Save me doing it myself then, or if i'm out late then they don't have light into the early hours. |

i`ve changed the lamp now for a mat and thrown the heat bulb away and just using a low wattage bulb in the light fitting. |

Heat stones, in my experience are better for lizards, as it gives a warm area to sit on, and bask, much like they would in the wild, but a snake? I have never in my life heard of, or seen a snake sat on a big stone, sunning itself, They're simply not fast enough to escape predators. Other people may have different opinions, but i'd imagine most is the same. I personnally think they could also burn the snakes, I've lost count of how many times mine hide under the stones and rocks in their vivs. |

I thought exactly the same, i just nodded at guy in the shop and made my excuses and left. I was told they can burn your snake but some pet shops will do anything to sell their products |

i ve alway been told to avoid heat rocks for snakes and so i always will. bu back to the mat/lamp thing as i said i perfer mats but the most important thing whatever you use to heat your snake is to have a thermostat. if you dont have one you are risking the life of your snake. in the summer is when they really come into there own in preventing your snake from getting to hot and cooking. and inyour thermostat prob is in the right place then your viv should be the correct temperture whatever method you use to heat it. |
