Can't decide what lighting to go with for my snake, its primarily for decorative purposes although a little heat would help.
Just picked up a Euro Rep spotlight and 60 Watt bulb and don't think its to suitable. Lots of heat instantly and not very good looking.
Would a UV tube be suitable/safe for a corn snake. Can place is out of site at the top of the tank at the front. |

I would not use a 60 watt bulb without a guardnover it. If your snake touches it it will be burnt immediately. Snakes lack the capacity to sense heat against themselves immediately like we do and will not have a reflex action to move away, therefore burns from bulbs can be severe.
Either get a guard or a low watt (9 Watt) energy saving bulb.
Corn snakes are diurnal and as such do not require UV lighting, so I would not go for UV bulbs personally. I think red bulbs can look good but have never managed to track down a low watt red bulb. |

Thanks, its already off, going to remove when its cooled down, very very hot. I just liked the light that a friends UV tube omits for his chameleon. Could probably place a tube quite easily in the top of the tank out of reach. I'd imagine its possible to get non-UV tubes but the light doesn't have the same feel.
Just have to return it and go with natural light for now. |

On second thoughts, I could take back the 60watt bulb, buy a 9 Watt energy saver and just change the orientation and place is where I want out of sight.
Do they give off very little heat? |

Very little. I can touch the one in my snakes viv. I do only have it on for a short while in the evenings and its handy for looking for poos in corners! |

Thanks loads for the idea, luckily found an 8W energy saver around the house!
Lots of duck tape later..
Much more even lighting, just need it on a timer and thats the lighting finished...
Next up, custom building some platforms! |
