I have a 15 year old corn and im worried about his health. I take him to the vets regular, but they are not specialists in reptiles/snakes. My corn keeps having really bad sheds, and not eating, he has lost serious weight. im bathing him to help with sheds but i bath him today and i notice that it wasnt just 1 layer of shed, i been keeping a close watch on him, and other than the "shed signs" he made recently, i have not noted any other signs that i could have missed. i know this is not normal and its never happend to me before. i have started to put in damp moss and he will lay in it on occassion, but i have also noticed that he dnt seem to drink his water much any more. Im trying to feed him on smaller rats, but so far, no joy. he is getting really thin. im taking him back to the vets this week. Please, any advise or tips will be seriously welcome.
( have read the thread Guide to non feeding snakes, and gonna try some of those out) |

I wish I could say something to help Cassie but I am no expert and it may just be this is nature taking its natural course....15yrs old is quite old.

| Yea i was kinda worried people were gonna say that. Snakey (not original i know) was 6 yrs when i bought him, or so the store manager told me. so i had him for just over 7 years, and im very attached to him. When i first got him he was a beutiful orange color but over the years his hide has dulled a bit and the colors r not as bright. hes become quite docilce but still has odd days where hes active. I read some where some one mentioned vitamin drops for snakes? its that available to all pet stores? i never even once thought to look for some thing like that. |

| I think you might be talking about 'Reptoboost' which is a pick-me-up for reptiles. It's a powder that you add to their water. It should be widely available, if not it's easy to get from the internet. I don't know if there are any old posts on here that deal with the problems of elderly snakes. I'm not brilliant on the search tool but you may find something on there if you're any good at using it. I do hope to find answers to your questions and I hope your snake will be ok. |

Poweraid is much better than reptoboost for supplements.
a 60:40% Poweraid to water ratio in the bath will be enough to get him hydrated and give him a bit of a perk up.
To remove the old shed put a pillowcase in the bath and cover it in luke warm water, rinse it out and put snakey in. Put a wee puddle of water in the bath, around 27*C, keep measuring the temmps so it wont get too cold, so he can move around in water and in the pillowcase to get it warm and humid so snake can get he skin off when he moves around the pillowcase.

Have heard that this is sometimes advice given on 'The Dark Side' and has, supposedly, been used with success....you can put it in their water to drink (one part poweraid to 4 parts water) but I am only saying what I have heard not what I know.

| what about the vitamin powder you dust on lizards food? would that be okay to put on his mouse next time he eats? as a vitamin supplement, or would it overdose him on calcium? at least it would give him some vitamins. |

| You mean Nutrabal? thats a good all rounder, although i think you will find Critical Care formula to be one of the best ones for helping out with supplements, it has everything they need in it, i had to syringe feed a gecko that had pin worm ccf twice a day for 2 weeks, it kept her alive and she put weight on! |

| i am very sorry to hear your bad news, and i know how frustrating it is not to have proper reptile vets in your area, i have had a look at the list of available reptile vets on this site and there is not many at all, i live in kent so my nearest is trinity but my thoughts are with anyone who lives in an area that has no reptile vets at all, there is definaltey a big demand for them in this country. but my thoughts are with you and your snake. i own 2 snakes and they mean everything to me. just recently lost my tortoise who died under anasthetic at the vets i never even had him for a year. |

| Hey guys, Thank you all for the great tips. just got back from 2nd trip to vets, they found a swelling about 2 thrids the way down his body so he was supposed to get an x-ray today. but it seems the fluids and antibiotics helped him, as 2 days ago he ate 1 pinky, not much but any progress is great :) they decided against the x-ray as they didnt want to make matters worse, and gave him another shot of anti biotics, going for another shot next week, so fingers crossed it helps more. going to continue with a few pinkys every other day. Also He drank when we got back from vets. havent seen him at his water bowl for ages either, so altho hes still not right, im hopeful. Im definately gonna give the pillow case trick ago Hillzi. Snakey is my first and only snake i ever had, and no-one i know keeps them, so its been hard at times to know if the things im doing are right. |
