im thinking about upgrading kasey's digs as squidward looks all squished up in his little plastic thing and needs a bit more space. as kasey is 2 1/2 foot i thought a 4 foot viv would be ok now and squidward could have the 3 footer till he gets bigger. just wondering what size heatmat id need for the bigger viv as i'v found a goog deal on ebay but its just for the viv-i have everything else. |

I think, and I'm sure someone will correct me if im wrong, you want it about a third of the floor size. So for a 4foot viv I think you would want one around a foot, though that does seem quite big. But around a third of the floor space is (I think) whats recommended |

a 3rd or a half of the size of the floor space is perfect heat mat size, it doesn't have to be mathematically worked out precisely though I did try to, and my head popped .
In my 3ftx2ft I've got an 11x10.
Your snake doesn't need a 4ft, the space in the viv IMO won't get used.. I've got a three foot viv and my corn doesn't use the space he's got. |

My Leo heat mat 17" x 11", in a 3' viv and it covers half the floor, although it doesn't come all the way to the front, my viv is 17 1/2" deep. So I would say a 23" x 11". That's going by Habistat, Komodo and Exo Terra sizes. But others with larger vivs would be able to help better
Hillzi - Who's the manufacturer of that mat size you gave? I've never cme across a 11 x 10?!? |

For my 4ft vivs I have a 23x11. Yes the length is half the size size but in total the heatmat size takes up a 3rd of the viv. I was tempted to get a 17x11 heatmat for my vivs as it covered a 3rd size in length but it would no-where near cover a 3rd of the floor space.
I really wish these companies would make their heatmats in proper sizes instead of stupid ones :/ |
A very special super, duper thanks for K :3 |

Couldnt agree with staple more.
Why manufacture in odd sizes? I have tried to get my head around the sizes, but cant.
1/3 of the floor space seems fairly standard throughout alot of reptile keeping which requires heat mats, so why not make them something like...
12 x 15, 12 x 18, 12 x 24 (for 36x15, 36x18 and 36x24) 16 x 15, 16 x 18, 16 x 24 (for 48x15, 48x18 and 48x24)
and so on.... |
