I was trying to think of my next c sharp / vb.net project today and came up with what I think would be a great idea.
A program which allows you to keep records of each of your snakes including feeding records, shedding records, pooping records, and whatever else you keep records on.
This is just an idea at the moment and if I do do it, itll be free and opensource, so some feedback on what you think of the idea + anything that should be included would be appreciated :) |

have a look at a program called 'Metzcal2' (free download from http://www.metzcal.com/) - this is i think aimed at professionals and covers anything you can think of, BUT for the hobby keeper it is way over the top, bloated, and hard to learn. If you can produce something along these lines, but easy to use then you'd be onto something good.
open source and free also sounds good, it will only encourage more users and more devs too :D
Good luck with the project and keep us all up to date on how you're getting on :) - you'll not be short of beta testers here! :D |

I agree, once you get something going, let us know. I have a myriad of operating systems that I could try to break the program on. |

It isn't a brick K, lol.
I would probaly be interested, and if it could be used for animals other than snakes that would be great. |

I would definitely be interested Jay....at the moment I am archaic and use a notebook and pen for each snake, which is not great as you run out of space too quickly....
But having said that I am not sure I would want to have to log on to my computer to fill in every time Kellog or Silvesta pooed (OK, I know I am a bit OTT with the note keeping )....
Let us know what you come up with.

Ah LittleMick I have a habit of making different programs crash when they shouldn't.
There's nothing like trying to force a program that's only designed for windows XP/Vista to run on Linux or Win95c. It's the fun of adjusting the operating system to suit a program. |

Here is a few screens of what I've come up with so far, it isn't all actually programmed yet so there isn't anything that I can give you to try yet. But feedback on these would be great :)
Kellog hopefully you can see from these that its more of 3 clicks to select date time and add than filling in a complex log.

Looks cool I would use it ^^ although where the medium mouse if you don't mind me asking :p and the final version will not need VB will it? Are you also thinking of adding a print button? hat other tabs are you planning on adding as well if I can be nosey and ask :3 Or is it going to be programmed so you add new tabs yourself? If there isn't maybe a poo tab, weight, length and some sort of misc tab or something to write down any potential health problems.
I'm sorry if I've give stuff you were going to do, I'm just quite excited now! |

It won't require VB to run, however, you will need to have at least Version 3.5 of the .NET framework installed. I haven't thought about adding a print button yet because I have never programmed anything that has needed to print, but im sure I can do that, though it may be one of the last things to be done. It will be programmed so you can add whatever you want to the availible foods, and there will be a poo tab as well as one with stats on it such as weight and length over various dates. Hadn't thought about anything with regards to health problems but thats a good idea and i'll try to incooperate it :). And overall it will be programmed so you can add a new tab at the top for each animal, and then it will autogenerate all the tabs as just mentioned. Will take a few weeks to get to quite that stage though :) |

Just been doing a little more programming on it and due to the amount of dynamic code needed am having a bit of a redesign so those screenshots above are no longer accurate. New shots will be up by the end of today (I hope) |

Cracking idea!
Have to admit, reading through the thread I went into geek mode and started thinking about database structures, table normalisation and all the other silly things dba's think about. Not that it would be of much concern here.
Would certainly love to look at the coding once it's all done! |

Sorry MacSpud, but there isn't a .NET framework that runs on Mac + I don't have a mac to develop on. |

I was just wondering the same thing, but seeing your answer, nevermind haha! Good thing I keep a PC around for gaming and junk I think it's a great idea and I would definitely use it. I currently use a spreadsheet/notebook-and-pen combo. Failtastic |

Micro$oft is the devils work lol ... can anyone recommend a good editing software, I use Taco on my 'PROPER' computer, what do you dark siders use?

I have an alpha version of this ready to test. IT IS NOT COMPLETE (just for emphisis) and currently only has a feed log, hwever if you use this alpha it will be compatible with future versions.
Here are a few screenshots of it, if you would like a copy later today then if you could reply to this thread, and make sure that your email address is in your profile I will send a copy along with the required log files and a README for you to have a test/play with :).
First start of the program

Creating a log

Adding a feed record
