I've noticed recently that the very tip of Embers tail has scabbed over and looks like it might fall off. Is that normal? I've seen photo's of Corn's with very stumpy tails and always wondered why their tail's were stumpy, and Ember's wasn't. Silly question I know, but do Corn's sometimes/eventually lose the tip of their tail? I know she's healthy as she fed perfectly yesterday, as well as shed wonderfully a few days before that and is still active. Any idea's guys and dolls? |

No, it is not normal.
Corn snakes (and all snakes for that matter) generally lose the tip of their tail because they did not shed the very tip of their old skin, that retained tip then strangles the blood supply to the tail tip and causes it to die and fall off.
It is always advised that you check the eye caps and tail tip of shed skins to be sure that they have both come off successfully as they are the areas that cause most trouble if they do not.
I would suggest that you run a bath for your snake (about 28c measured on a digital thermometer) to let the tail soak and hopefully soften the skin. Once it has soaked for a while you would need a damp towel. Let the snake slide through the towel while applying very gentle pressure, hopefully after doing this for a while any retained shed on the tail tip will of come away... do not be surprised if the tail tip falls off as well though, if it is as bad as you make it sound.
Photos would also be a great help. |

Her last shed was perfectly intact, eye caps and tail tip. I'll take photo's tomorrow as she was fed recently, I have no idea what may have caused it =/ Unless she perhaps caught her tail underneath something, but I don't see how. |

Okay so I couldn't get a decent photo when I tried as my camera conked out on me. But here's a photo I took when I first noticed it;
It's spread a bit more than that now, and upon inspection it looks like it's dented from getting caught in something =[ |

It still looks like a classic example of the very tip of the previous shed being retained if i am honest. Without better pictures it is hard to really say though. |

As far as I know the tip was shed during the last shed. But I suppose she may have been sneaky and not shed it. I don't know =[ It's a shame it's happened, but if I didn't know about it there isn't much I could have done. |

The tail doesnt look like a typical retained shed, i would keep a very close eye on it, make sure it doesnt get any bigger. Can you get a better pic from the top, or anywhere from 90 degrees to the tail. Also have a very close look at the tail to see if there is any skin retained, if you soak the tail, best off doing the whole snake, its easier, then use something hard but not sharp to scrape the tail and see if any skin comes off. |
