Ive just bought my first corn snake, hes lovely but was a bit distressed whilst andling him transfering him into the viv. hes about 6mnth old and struck out, is this just nerves of a new environment? should a settling in periods of 3 days or so be ok before handling? also hes not been out of his hide yet in 2 days is this ok being in a new place and all?
thanks

We advise a 1week (7day) hands off period to let them settle in.
Young snakes can be very defensive, once he realises that you are not a threat he will stop striking.
Did you get a thermostat and digital thermometer in your set up for your snake? |

Just thought i would ask as many people buy starter kits from there rep shops, and many rep shops don't include these crucial pieces of kit. |

Danny is right in everything he has said Jamie. Your new corn will be very scared and stressed, which is why we always suggest you follow the one-week rule (it is more of a guide than a rule but worth adhering too!)...no handling or feeding for the first week to allow your snake to get over the stress of the move and for him to get used to the new smells and his new surroundings. This means just putting your hand in to change the water daily and straighten the substrate, so he can get used to your smell and not be threatened by you. You mustnt worry about him not feeding for that week, corns are a lot hardier than we realise and going for a week without food will not do them any harm, no matter how small they are. You are rarely advised this in a lot of pet shops but it is an important way of getting your snake to de-stress and feel safe with you. It is a hard week, very frustrating, but worth it for the snake's sake.
He will hide away to begin with and a lot of corns spend most of their day hiding, but he will be coming out at night to explore. I would suggest that you leave him for the week with no handling, then feed him, leave him for 48 hrs after feeding and then start the handling.
The reason Danny checked about the stat and digital thermometer is that unfortunately many pet shops cannot be trusted with what they are telling you . I know that I double check anything I am told on here.
You will also find that there is a large amount of conflicting information out there about corn keeping – on the internet, in books, etc, which is why Danny is checking what temps you have the warm end at. It is always good to check out on here that what you are reading is right as it can be misleading sometimes.

Listen guys many thanks indeed for all the tips, its really appreciatted thats exactly why im checking because ive read different things. yes my temp is set at 28oC. Would the heat mat alone be enough or should i compliment with a light? like i said ive read and read but opinions differ thats why im just making sure.
absolute brilliant support thankyou i will adhere to all you have said.

Hi Jamie, Another thing that you can do to help your snake get used to you is to put a small item of clothing, i.e old sock, in his/her hide. If you tuck it in your top for a day to get your scent on it then put it in with your snake it will have a constant smell of you in a 'safe' place so you won't be such a threat when you can handle after the one week rule! You'll find this site is really friendly and you will get very good advice here. I used this forum loads for research before I got my snake, and still ask for help if necessary. Nothing is deemed a stupid question so do ask if you're not sure. Good luck with your snake. What's his/her name by the way? |

Hi Jamie,
The heatmat is sufficient you do not need to suppliment the heating with any other heat sources.
Feeding out of the viv is fine a lot of people here do so, |

The heatmat by itself is fine and your temp sounds good. The snakes have no need of light as the daylight coming into the room is enough for them. They absorb their heat from their bellies so the heat they need will come from the heatmat. A lot of us do have lights in our vivs, low wattage low energy ones, but for our own benefit so we can see our snakes - not for the snake's benefit. And if you do have a light then you must make sure that it has a guard otherwise your corn could burn itself or crush the bulb.

again!
It is certainly best to feed your snake outside of their viv, otherwise there is a risk of them injesting some of the substrate when they eat, which can cause them problems. It is best to have a RUB that you use specifically for feeding them in.
When it comes to feeding time just move your snake to the RUB, with no handling. Make sure your hands are clean and you dont have any mouse smell on them! If you line the RUB with kitchen roll then, after your snake has fed, then you can either gently lift it back into its viv by lifting it on the kitchen roll, or you can tip the RUB slightly and let it slide back it into the viv by itself, or you can very gently pick it up supporting it on either side of the bump and move it carefully into the viv.
And no need for the thanks - that is what the forum is for .

Do you have photobucket? You can use that to upload picures to this site. There is a guide on how to do it in the photos section. |
