Got a call from a young friend of mine yesterday. She had been to visit a horse that she used to loan from a wheeler-dealer near me, and found it caught up in a barb wire fence with blood squirting out of its leg, unable to walk and clearly very distressed.

Being a sensible girl, she immediately rang the man and explained. He came down, looked at it- and refused to ring the vet. Obviously she was hugely upset, and sent me pics of the horses leg. What a mess!!

So, me and a friend went down there first thing this morning to find that the owner had wrapped a dirty flannel around the leg, and put a brushing boot over the top. I had my first aid kit with me, and managed to get it clean and dressed properly, and put a support bandage on, but it urgently needs flushing, stitches and antibiotics. Just waiting for the SSPCA to open so I can report it, but they can be pretty useless at the best of times.

Its not the only horse of his that needs looking at, there is a weanling with over grown feet and a badly fitting headcollar. The horses have no food, and appalling fencing.

Makes me sick!!!

police, sspca, ring the vet yaself and get them to assess the animal/s..i believe they can present their evidence in caes going to court., sometimes unfortunately if your animals or not ya need to do all the foot work.. just make sure as many people as poss are aware of these animals.. have had similar situation myself.. which i cant go into .. but just make as much noise as poss get peoples attention it wont carry on for much longer.Yeah sensible is great but as the guy obviously dont care then go bypass him .. and get to those that can make the difference he will kick and protest as hes been found out.

love my animals more than i like people.

Well I rang the SSPCA, they aren't going to send out a specialist equine welfare officer, just a normal one, and they won't tell me whether or not they will go out today. I stressed that the horses requires URGENT treatment, but I think it fell on deaf ears.

Typical response from them imo.

i used to work on a livery yard n there was a horse there that got injured and the owner didnt give to flying monkeys as they had their other 'better' horses on there yard... just rich snobs, there is nothing wrong with that horse but he can be clumsy, bargy, but other than that not reli anything else but anyway i shall stop ranting lol

Had a call, they will be going down at lunchtime to see him, apparently they were out in february to have a word about his fencing. Shame he didn't heed their advice which has now resulted in his best horse having its leg sliced open. I'm hoping that he will just call it quits and sign them over into their care, but he's too greedy- he breeds his own horses and sells them so would be making a big loss.

That would be the best punishment for animal cruelty - you are subjected to whatever you subjected them to - would certainly make people think twice

Can understand totally how you feel Rach and am so glad that the SSPCA are moving their backsides to see the horse this afternoon - they should have been out there as soon as they heard about it especially as they have had dealings with him before.

I would suggest that you also go along the same lines as was suggested about the pet shop that you got Croc from - get pics and detail everything you saw and did (including about the other horse as well), get your friend to write down a report of everything she saw and did....and get a couple of other friends to independently go up and see what he has done so they can report him as well, with no connection to you.

I do hope he does sign it over to them, I am not sure what the situation would be regarding treating the horse and vet bills - if he refused to pay for a vet then surely they would have grounds to just take the horse?

Agree with Punumbear....as many people as possible should be made aware of this, with documented evidence.

I really hope the horse is ok and he has all his horses taken off him - but unfortunately I doubt that will happen.

xxx

If he won't pay for a vet and prove he is treating the horse today then they will be able to take the horse and have it treated themselves.

My friend was really good and took pictures of the injury and of the skinny weanling, so we have them as evidence, as well as the word of me and 3 other people.

Fingers crossed, she is a lovely horse, and none of them deserve to live like they are.

Ima big believer in Karma - you do get what you give in this world - just occasionally i want to give the universe a helping hand tho - its not fair to do this to creatures who have no choice

Fingers crossed for later - keep us posted!

I kinda hope he doesn't get the poor thing treated. At least that will get the horse taken off him and hopefully the others too. If he gets it treated who is to say how much they will have to suffer before they are removed.

i know what you mean - in the long term if he dosnt get them treated they will be taken off him, whilst if he does then they will stay for probable future neglect.

i dont know how people can mistreat animals - it makes no sense - i couldnt bring myself to do it

SO NOW I AM CROSS.....

Just got off the phone with the "welfare" officer- she didn't even look at the wound on the leg because there was a bandage over it (which the owner took credit for) and he had said he was cleaning it lots, so to her "it was fine."

I've had to persuade her to go back tomorrow and look at it, rather than leaving it to the beginning of next week, like she was planning. Honestly, what do they get paid for???

LOL

Just had a call from the very sheepish inspector- she went back to see the wound and agrees it needs urgent veterinary treatment. She is going back first thing tomorrow to have the vet out, and have a severe word with the man.

I am very relieved now, I hated the thought of that poor horse suffering.
