Hi all! Am sure there are plenty of posts about this but I havent got time to look for them!
I took boris out to clean his viv and i noticed he wasnt moving around much as he usually does. I noticed his eyes have started going a dark cloudy blue colour. Am I right in guessing hes about to shed? If so what can i do to help him? i.e temps, humidity etc.....

Thanks again!

Jack

Yep he is certainly going into shed. Most will be fine with no intervention but if you do want to do anything to aid him once his eyes have cleared you could add a damp hide. This can be done with spagnum moss which you lightly dampen with water and put in a hide. You could also add an extra water bowl into the warm end, this will raise humidity slightly. Temps need to stay the same.

If i were you i would just leave him for his first shed and see how he copes on his own. Try not to handle as he will be almost blind and could become quite stressed. I also don't feed any of mine whent they are in blue.

I hope Boris sheds well for you Jack. Alice is also in blue at the moment and has been hiding since last thursday. Going by his last shed I expect him to shed around this saturday so i think I will be rather bleary eyed hoping to see it.

Danny really has it covered (as usual ).

For this first shed just add an extra water bowl into the warm side (dont just move his normal one as you dont want him drinking warm water ). You could also mist the viv lightly every morning. That is all I do with mine and I have no problems (so far).

There is no need to adjust the temps at all.

Danny is also right about not handling Boris during this period. I know his eyes are cloudy at the moment, which means he is virtually blind. After a few days they will clear up but it will still take a few more days after that before he sheds and even during this period, although his eyes look clear, his sight will be restricted.

I also dont attempt to feed mine during this time, considering it is a usually around a week I would rather they went without food (which they can do without any problem) than add any stress by trying to get them to feed. Having said that some members snakes do feed while 'blue'....it just depends on the snake.

I just know that I prefer to keep their stress to a minimum - hence no handling or feeding.

Once he has gone clear and it is a few days later look out for him rubbing his head along the edge of the hide, rocks, branch or side of viv....those are the signs that he is going to begin to shed, and when it happens it happens fast! Unfortunately most snakes seem to have the ability of being able to wait until those few minutes that their owner is out of the room to shed ....so a lot havent seen a shed yet. I hope you do.

Once he has shed you need to check that it is a 'clean' shed. It may come off in one piece or more, but what is important is that the eye caps and the tail tip are seen on his shed, and therefore not retained on him....as these can cause problems. If there are any problems then post them on here and someone can help you out.

Am sure it will go well ....and I hope you get to see it!

just to add athough all the advice given is spot on, you may find that your snake doesnt need any alterations to the viv ie another water bowl or anything, none of mine except the royals need any changes in their vivs when they are blue
help him out this shed but maybe next time he is going blue leave him to see how he does on his own?
hope he sheds ok for you

Yer there is only candy that i ever raise the humidity for and add damp hides She has a bit of a gammy tail, even when i helped her along last time i still had to get the last bit off her with some damp kitchen paper.

I did say in my first post though most will be fine without any intervention

Listen to these guys for sure - I worried about Bella going hungry and fed her after she had started rubbing her head and her skin had started to peel (stupid stupid me), and so she forgot about shedding and struck her meal - she then took 2hours + to eat it!!! I was sooo worried. Eventually she managed it and was as active as ever, but seemed to forget she was shedding and hasn't bothered since. So, thankfully I have got some advice off the forum and am going to try that. Hope your shed goes better than ours, I am sure it will if you listen to these guys! :)
Good luck!

That is fantastic news Jack. So pleased that Boris' first shed went fine ! Did you get to see it??

Good luck with the thinking your fingers are pinkies bit! Do you feed in his faun or in a separate RUB? Is it only when he feeds that he gets confused? If you have been tagged then supposedly you are now a real snake owner....which I am not yet !
