Two weeks ago i finished making my own viv. The frame supporting the viv is made from sapele. Top/base and sides are all ply but of different types the inside faces are vannered with ash and oak and the glass was mis-measured throw aways! (all materials were free). before building the viv i looked at the do's and dont's but there is no real list of wood/timbers you can use ( only repeats of dont use softwoods) is it only softwoods or all sap woods? any glues to use/avoid? and what are the best varnishes to seal a viv when done?
anyone whos built vivs or knows about this please post what you used or if there is anything to stay away from. Because i want another corn and im going to build the viv again! cheers
What do you mean sap woods? It may just be me being thick but all trees give off sap and all woods come from a tree.
I would just stay away from the woods which are toxic to your snake. These include Pine and Cedar but as said it is best to stay away from all soft woods.
softwoods comonly used (Douglas fir,western red ceder' redwood' whitewood' parana pine) all trees have sap but white and red wood will still contain resin/sap in damaged part when converted into timber the others are far denser and wont damage so no sap will remain. and im trying to find out what wood other than (softwood) are toxic?
I think its mainly the softwoods that are toxic and you should avoid. All hard woods or any chipboard would be of to use. But remember if you do use chip board or something similar laminate it with some sort of cover so that it dosn't get wet.
