Hi

Just weighed Max and he weighs 20g and is approx 7 months old.
I had been feeding him one pinkie once a week, am I underfeeding him ? should he be on two ? Would hate to think he has been going hungry.....

You definately should move him up to two at 20 grams in fact I'd thinking about small fuzzies

Does the pinkie leave a bulge in snakes tummy, would offer 2 pinkies for a while before moving up to fuzzies

Thanks, fed him one pinkie about 3 quarters of an hour ago, should I thaw another one today and give it to him or wait a few days ?
Not really a bump when he eats the pinkie.

If there is no bump, then you should move him up to two pinkies. I don't know about today though.

How big is the one pinkie you are giving him? Casper weighs 20 grams at last feed and is currently on 1 x 3gpinky + 1 x 2g pinky.

Will be moving him upto 1 fuzzy soon.

Just bring him up gradually. Don't take what we say and then give him a fuzzy lol. Give him 2 pinkies for a couple of weeks increasing the size gradually.

Definitely agree with Danny that you need to bring him up gradually....and dont feel guilty that you werent feeding Max enough, you werent to know.

There is a VERY ROUGH feeding guide that some of us follow, although others prefer to go by what they feel their snake needs:

Snake (4 – 15g) = 1 Pinkie (0.5 – 3g) - feed every 5 to 6 days
Snake (16 – 23g) = 2 pinkies (3 – 4g) - feed every 5 to 6 days
Snake (24 – 30g) = small fuzzy (3 – 6g) - feed every 6 to 7 days
Snake (30 – 50g) = fuzzy (7 – 9g) - feed every 6 to 7 days
Snake (51 – 90g) = fluff/hoppers (7 – 12g) - feed every 6 to 7 days
Snake (91-170g) = Small Adult/Weaned (13-18g) - feed every 7 days
Snake (170g+) = Large (19 to 25g) - feed every 7 to x days
Snake (170+) = X large (350 +) - feed every 10 to x days

This means that Max should be able to handle the 2 pinkies fine for a few more feeds and then move him up to a small fuzzy.

When you feed him the 2 pinkies at one time wait until the 1st pinkie has moved halfway down his body before you offer him the 2nd. Snakes are opportunistic feeders...in the wild they will never know when or where they are getting their next meal and they are the same in captivity, so given the chance they will overfeed and it is up to us to make sure this doesnt happen, no matter how hungry they may look! This means that he will happily take the 2nd pinkie before the 1st has moved far enough down.

If you gave Max the 2nd pinkie yesterday, then wait 5 days from then before you offer him the next feed.

xxx
