hi am a bit confused so after some advice please. i have a 9 yr old cornsnake he was kept in homemade viv which had light for heat during day and heat pad at night which is what breeder told us to do but have recently got a new viv and was told by shop corns don't need a light and just a heatpad on all the time will be enough, the temp of substrate over pad is 30 to 32 but it's only 18c at the other end.. should he have a light as well? he's been sick before but that was sorted when temp was turned up and have started getting his weight back up so just want to avoid that happening again. |

welcome!
corns dont need lighting. It should be 28-30* in the hot end, and 22 in the cool. Heatmat statted 24/7 set it at 29*.

yeah i agree with hillzi, corns do better with heatmats because they absorb heat through the underside unlike other snakes which bask in the sun and therefore need a light a heatmat set to 29*c will be fine

just another question... as its a glass viv i'v put the mat on a few thin layers of polystyrine inside then substrate over the top or is it better to put it under the viv? i haven't stuck it down as i wasn't sure what to use |

your set up sounds absolutely fine without the bulb (it's definitely not necessary!)
with a glass viv you have the choice of putting the mat inside or underneath, it's personal preference. but make sure the substrate is thin enough over the heatmat for the heat to get through.
a glass viv WILL lose heat quite rapidly in winter and have a 'greenhouse effect' in the summer so it's a good idea to cover 3 sides of the viv for 2 reasons......... 1. so the snake feels more secure and less exposed, and 2. to provide some insulation from extreme temperatures, in the winter in particular i'd use corrugated cardboard or polystyrene. |

I am having trouble with the temps myself, due to it being a glass viv..
I do insulate it, works quite well.

ok thanks he does seem to spend most of the time in the cooler end even after he's been fed he has a habit of going under his water bowl but you say to set the heatmat to 29 but looking at mine its a set temp so as it was registering 30-32 i'v thickened substrate to make it bit cooler it now 30.5 but cooler end is still only 17.5-18 will try insulating it put prob under water bowl and thats reading 19.2 |

Hi all, this is quite relevant to me at the moment too because I am about to set & fit my new stat. If I set it to 29*c constantly, how do I manage to get the night time temp to drop a bit? I am thinking of keeping the light set up to take care of the daytime temp (it is currently 82f in the day), and setting the stat a bit lower to kick in when the light goes off at night. What do you think? |

don't both TBH a night-time drop isn't needed and is a real pain in the bum unless you have a stat that's set up with that function i think you'll find the vast majority of keepers just don't bother |
