When do corns start constricting there food? And when should you offer food on tweezers to get them to strike?
Do some corns never strike? Obviously just putting the pinkie/fuzzy in a tub or in the faun isnt giving them chance to strike?

| Khan is 2 months old and he strikes for his food. Just fed him now and he strangled the death out of it for about 5 minutes. |

my 17 year old corn only recently started striking as his previous owner just literally threw a rat (yes, i know!!) into the viv and he picked it up off the floor (pine woodshaving as substrate.......yes i know!!!)
most of my youngster started constricting my the time they were about a year old, and the two hatchies left from this years breeding are striking already........
so basically it varies  |
cornsnakes, ratsnakes, bullsnakes, boas and day geckos

| my carolina struck from when we got him at 6wks, my snow corn who was the same age now nearly 2yrs has only struck once and the accedentale baby of the two has always been force fed since mid september goes it depends on the snake |

Think it really is down to the snake, its personality, how its fed, whether its lazy....
When we first got Kellog he didnt eat for the 1st 13 weeks, so when he did strike we immediately dropped mouse to make sure he ate. It has meant he has become very lazy...is a slow striker, doesnt constrict, just throws a coil over the top of the mouse as if to say 'This is mine and no-one else is having it!'. Now I am sure he is feeding properly I am going to make it a bit tougher for him, make the mouse dance a bit more and not let go so easily...hopefully it will encourage him to become a bit more active in his feeding.
To be honest all that matters to me is that my snake is eating!

| If i dangle a mouse infromt of flffys face, he strikes at it and i move it a bit so he misses and then he just strikes and constrics lol |

| Cranberry almost constricted for the 1st time last feed. I moved the fuzzy around so she missed a few times then when she got hold she wrapped a coil around it :) If i just leave her food in her feeding box she will be lazy and just swallow it, no striking or constricting! |

| I used to dangle the mouse for Colin when he was younger and he would strike mainly, but sometimes it would take a while so i started leaving it in the viv for him and he has eaten this way for the past few years. I guess he would strike if I started dangling again but I've never considered that just putting the mouse in the viv is a problem. Besides, he got a bit too close to my finger the one time!! |

The pinkies are a bit too small for my fingers! haha. She might get me by mistake.
Will wait till shes on fuzzys.

| We use a set of chopsticks rather than forcerps/tongs. Both strike every time, but Ziggy has only constricted once and Kizzy never has. As others have said, it's down to the individual snake really. |

Whats the reason for using chopsticks as opposed to forceps?
Is there any danger of the snake getting the forceps by mistake and hurting its mouth?

not generally with corns BUT......
i use BBQ tongs for feeding mine and my big Dumerils girl once stuck and constricted around the tongs......which she managed to swallow about 4" of before i could literally wrestle them off/out of her. and i DO mean literally WRESTLING with my 6ft boa. it was absolutely horrific  |

i used to feed all my adult corns by hand (adult mice have long tails lol) but then i got chicken, not for any particular reason though.
you can start using tweezers/forceps/tongs whenever you want to, i think the main reason for me was so i wasn't handling the prey item too much as this can put the snake off the scent. |

Okay thanks.
I will get myself a pair of forceps or something and give them a try.
Shes on 2 pinkies, so i just put her in the RUB with both of them and she has them about 10 mins apart.
If using forceps/tongues should i offer the 2nd pinkie as soon as she has had the first? Or leave it for 5 mins?

Hi Gaz,
We usually use chopstick as we have hundreds of pairs in the house and didn't see the point in paying extra for a set of tongs to do the same job.  We usually hold on to the mousies bum with the chopsticks and let go after striking. |

| I use forceps so Cranberry doesnt confuse my finger with a fuzzy.....the one time I didnt use the forceps she got me! lol! luckily shes only small so it didnt hurt! :) |
