| it appears everything i was told about the set up for my caramel appears to be wrong, can anyone please advise where the thermostat should be, i was advised an inch and a half above the heat mat, also the thermometers, where should these be placed, i was told on the viv near the top and looks like this is wrong, my heat mat is set between 84 and 88 is this right? thanks to anyone who can help x |

| No a light is not necessary for a corn, if people put them in it's purley to look nice, you need to be aware that most lights also give off heat too so need to be on a thermostat. Take a look at the care sheet http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/corn_snake_care_sheet.htm it should answer most of your questions regaring the set up and temps. |

lights aren't needed, but some people like to use them to have better visibility of their snakie. but if you do use a light, be careful that it won;'t affect the ambient temp too much.
Some bulb can increase the temp a surprising amount, and you don't want a fried snakie! |

L.E.D lights can produce a very nice asthetically pleasing moonlit glow, but i dont like to use lights as i fear snakey may get a little ticked off...
IF you decided to put a light generating bulb in there. make sure you turn off it (duhh) to fit in with the natural light patterns. also you MUST have a guard. No burns or if faulty for any reason electric shocks.
No one wants a fried kebabed snakey. ;) |

The thermometer needs to take the ground temps- not the air temps- so if you have a digi therm then the probe needs to be ON the substrate or under the substrate over the heat mat- so that you know what the groung temp is. |

| Are you sure you haven't mixed up what they said? As the thermometer should be a inch above the heat mat and the thermostat can be placed at the top... |

Surley if its an inch above the substrate then it is reading the air temps and not the ground temps where the snake is actually touching?

When I went to purchase a heat source for this larger viv, the guy at the pet store insisted that I had to have alight. I refused until the mat failed to work. Then I bought the heat lamp and watched Snickers burrow, act crazy trying to get away from it, etc. I went into the computer and read that a constant glowing light stresses the corn snakes. I guess I should go back and try another mat, but the cable is doing well for her. She is still burrowing, but I've read recently in here that it is normal and some of the people even start the holes for them to burrow in. Now I'm back to no light other than what comes in through my window. My living room where Snickers is has an entire wall window, which was the reason I didn't feel a light was necessary.quote:

Unfortunately this happens a lot with pet shops  and is why we suggest you check anything you are told with the forum. You will be amazed at how often pet shops give wrong and even dangerous advice to newbies who dont know any better  .

| the problem with shops (even specialist rep shops) is that you're VERY unlikely to get a staff member who is clued up about EVERY species they stock. so you often get a blanket 'one size fits all' kinda talk that might not be accurate for the particular species you're planning to buy |
