Hello,
This is my first post.
I am 20 years old, from Staffordshire.
I am hoping to get a baby corn snake in the near futire, i have read the care sheet and lots of other articles bit ive still got a few other questions.
I will ask them in the relevent section though.

Welcome to the forum Gaz! You will find that this is a great place with lots of experienced owners happy to give their advice and support. You also gets lots of fun and friendship as a bonus. Sounds like you have already done a fair bit of research but I would advise the following (sorry if it is repeating what you already know):
1. Very early advise but important, when you get your snake you need to leave it for a week to get over the stress of moving to your house and let it settle into its new surroundings by leaving it without handling or feeding for a week. Only put your hand in daily to change water and straighten substrate, that way it gets used to your smell.
2. Am sure you have already read the care sheet on here (http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/corn_snake_care_sheet.htm), lots of information for new snake owners. Also read this topic on 'Your 1st Snake' http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4133
3. No question is regarded as a silly question on here.....it is much better asked and answered, you will probably find others who want the info too!
4. When you do get your snake you need to get as much info about it as possible....shedding history, feeding history etc. Start your own 'Snake Diary', noting things like weight, length, feeding dates and what you feed, shedding dates, health problems. I know it seems a bit over the top but it is actually really helpful keeping track of your snake's health - I even note when Kellog poos!!
5. Unwritten forum rule (bit early for you at the moment) - pics as soon as possible!
Am sure you cant wait to get your snake and it is great that you are researching it before getting it! Too many people just walk into a pet shop and walk out with a snake, knowing nothing about it. But I will warn you that corn snakes are addictive.....and yes, the majority of us have stood up, said "hello my name is **** and I am addicted to corns........! And I am proud of it!" You havent started down that path yet so be warned!!

I went to my local reptile pet shop yesterday, they breed there own corns on site. I handled the mother, she is a gorgeous Amelanistic Corn and really friendly.
They had got lots of babies in, and i really took a shine to a 25 week old Amel, same as the mother.
They have kept a feeding and shedding diary and say that this corn is a really good feeder and sheds well.
I am going back to get him/her on saturday :-)
I was reccomended to get a 'Faunarium' like a little plastic tank which i am told will be ideal for 4-5 months, so when the snake is about 10 months old. Does this sound about right?

Congratulations on choosing your snake! Bet you can't wait to get him/her home!
The fauns are fine Gaz. We use the large flat faun's (approx 18" in length) for our two (one faun each - not co-habiting!!). They will do until the snake is about 2 1/2 feet long. As a general rule: Length of tank + depth of tank = snake length.

As a general rule how long will a 12 month old corn be? Or how long do you think it would take to out-grow the faun?
The faun i will be getting is approx 18" x 8" so would be okay untill the snake is about 2' like you said.

It's difficult to say how long a yearling would be as they all grow at different rates depending on what/how often they've been fed etc...
Our two are sprouting like weeds at the moment - getting so big so quick!
I reckon that the shop isn't far off with 4-5 months or so, but maybe one of the more experienced guys may be able to help out a little more. |

Not sure about names, i like Apollo or Stella. Not sure how snakey they are, lol.
Also its hard with not knowing the sex.
I will find it hard not to touch it for a week! Lol. But i will manage.
I was reading a few articles last night and it is advised that a hide is placed in the hot AND cold end of the faun. Is this generally good advice? I think the reasoning is that it may want to hide and forget its temp, if its hide is only in the hot end it may not go to the cool end at all.
Also where should the water bowl be positioned? Cold end?
I am asking small and picky questions but i have done alot of research and i want to make sure ive got everything spot on before bringing him home.
I dont like to do things half hearted, and im not the kind of person to have a pet and get fed up of it. Ive wanted a snake for 4 years so i think its time to take the plunge!

Hi Gaz,
You're right, the water bowl should be on the cold end and 2 hides - 1 in the hot side and 1 in the cold to allow the snake to thermoregulate correctly. The week seems like an eternity, but unfortunately it's essential...
Hope you get some names figured out soon, but Apollo and Stella are good names! (Particularly like Apollo!)

don't listen to kellog  i got a vicious 4ft corn out after 3 days. (Not stupidity, there was reasons behind that, it should REALLY be kept to.. )
Well one of my corns is 14 months old and is 1 and a half but he's pretty chunky. if they decide not to get thicker, they could be longer, which is why its hard to give an 'average' length for a snake of a certain age. They all grow at different rates.

I have no problems upgrading to a decent vivarium whenever hes ready.
Just dont want to rush him, but on the same note dont want him in a faun too small.
Will keep you updated and measure him weekly etc.

Also what is the difference between Amel and Okeetee?
And Reverse Okeetee?
Are all the colours just colours? Or are the differences in temperment and size etc?
