does anyone know if theres any side effects from baytril in snakes? the first 2 attempts where unsuccessful but now managed to get some in ravens mouth, thing is shes now gone tense from head to about middle, unresponsive to tail pinches. she still breathing, albeit slowly and the occasional tongue. i`ve put her on the warm side but she hasn`t moved.
i fear the worst, i`m reaaly worried. |

| shes been regurging food for the past few weeks, its vet prescribed, but the advise given was from a book, so not a knowledgable vet. i`m not sure i want to continue giving baytril if this happens in all honesty. i`ve given 1 pinkie a little while ago which she took without the usual king enthusiasm and is now over on the cool side so at least she can now move by herself. |

I have heard cases of impaired vision after heavy dosages after a long time.
How many times have you given it?
Call up a reptile vet and ask would be a good idea.. Although not an official appointment, just ask for a bit of advice.

| i`m useing the boost as well, there was a small deposite in the corner this morning so something is getting thru. hopefully the pinkie will stay down, if its not thrown up tomorrow morning (previous time frame was less than 24 hours) then things will look better, then i can feed more |

I've heard about Baytril being used for lizards. In those cases it is a broad spectrum antibiotic which can suppress the appetite and kill the natural gut fauna so probiotics are often given along with it. I don;t know if it's the same for snakes but the reaction you've described doesn't sound good. I personally wouldn't give it again unless it was prescribed by a knowlegable herp vet.

| i got the stuff from the vet on monday but today was the only time i could acually get the stuff in her mouth, i was also given panacur |

is it oral Baytril of RTU injectable? the oral stuff is a bit gloopy and the injectable is like water........
how are you administering it? i'm guessing orally... if so did you dilute it with a little bit of water? did the vet give you latex gloves to wear whilst handling the product? did he instruct you how to give it ie. avoiding getting it into her lungs?
how much are you giving and how much does the snake weigh? it's usually administered at 0.2ml per kg so you should be giving an amount proportional to your snake's weight............

| it is oral administer but its quite difficult on such a small snake, there was no guide on how to do it and i doubt the vet would even know seing as she had to look up its basic needs from a book. 5 daily doses (2 left) of 0.1cc, not watered down, i tried it on a pinkie yesterday - she took the head then spat it out. raven weighed 34 grams a couple of weeks ago so a bit less than that now. |

personally I'd ring or email a specialist vet, sounds like yours prefers the fluffy pets!

if it's Baytril 2.5% (usual strength, undiled oral Baytril) that's the recommended dose for a 500g snake........ a reasonable size adult!!! 
watering it down slightly makes it easier to get down them

grasp the snake gently immediately behind it's head, open the lower jaw with the syringe tip and aim at the back of the throat being very careful to avoid the windpipe which you should see in the bottom of it's mouth. depress the plunger of the syringe gently so you're administering it slowly so the snake can swallow it without drowning in it

this morning is looking better - the pinkie i gave her about this time yesterday is still inside of her, thanks for the advise GP i dont know the strength of the baytril but i dont think i`ll be trying it any more i`ll stick to the reptiboost in the water. i had been holding just behind the head but i couldn`t get the end of the syringe right in, that may have been the problem maybe some went down the wrong hole i just dont know.
thought - what about putting the baytril in the water bowl? |

just an update - she`s looking much better now, no sign of regurge and she`s out climbing all over the faun.
*sigh of relief* i`m still ditching the rest of the baytril tho
*oh and solid has now taken a mouse yay  its ben 3 weeks |

well i'm currently in the veterinary profession and we are instructed to wear gloves and do instruct owners to do the same and supply them with latex gloves........ as per the datasheet and NOAH compendium............... |
