Hi All,

When I have my viv set up and running I am planning on buying my first corn snake - I have been to Porton Pets near sailsbury and most of the baby snakes there are around 60 pounds, however I noticed on places like free ads for example they go from as little as 10 pounds. Are there any advantages from purchasing from a shop rather than a private breeder or can you recommmend any good shops in my local area - Basingstoke.
Thanks K

private breeders tend to be cheaper and generally have higher standard of snake for sale. pet shops are dear, and £60 for a baby is far too much! unfortunately I dont know of anything in your area... I'm in Scotland!

like SB said private breeders are better in a way as you will usually get a better quality snake and generally cheaper they will also be able to show you the parents, and tell you if its het for anything and hopefully a health sheet telling you when the snake was last fed what it fed on,when it shed and when it last had a poo:)

Wherever you get snake from dont buy it without pushing for as much info as possible - as Fantiki said should have a 'care sheet' hopefully showing weights, when fed, sheds, poo timing etc. Also inspect snake carefully and viv it has come out of for mites - little black specks moving around. If it has them then dont buy! xxx

i got my carolina Mont from Jimmus on here.. he sent me everything i needed with him but as he lives in portsmouth its a bit out of your way..
actually thinking about it all 3 of mine are from breeders.. my lav.stripe is from Sue at www.hissnhers.com (or .co.uk - i cant remember) and she is recommended by someone else on here - think its eeji..
and my hypo lav is coming from another breeder called Pete who is really nice and has lovely snakes..
am gettin the full shed/feed/weight info and any extras with all of them from their hatch date to now..

i personally would prefer to get one from a breeder that other people have had experience with.. not that i dont trust pet shops but i think you are more likely to get all the info you need about your snake as they have had it all its life whereas at a petshop i cant help but wonder where the snake came from and if the shop even knows its full history

plus the prices can vary.. my carolina was £25 from a breeder but ive seen them for £40 in the local rep shop..

but its personal choice really

Quality breeders or online is the best way. I Live in farnham and have been over basingstoke to look for reptile shops - couldn't find a single one

Pet shops charge way to much for livestock imo.

if you're looking for a good deal, then get yourself down to the Doncaster show on 6th September, there will be loads of good prices there (come and find my table and say 'hi' )
