Hi to everyone. I have just registered as I got my first corn snake yesterday. Shop said born late 08 and a ghost male. Was told not to touch him or feed him for a week. When I do feed him I would like opinions on whether I should I feed him with tweezers in his viv or in another container. |

Hiya and welcome to the forum I always take flora out of her viv and just use a plastic tub to feed her in I have been told it's for the best to take snakies out as they could think anything going into the viv is food I do use tweezers she doesn't strike as of yet but I don't really want to get nipped lol |

also feeding outside the viv in a rub will stop the snake eating any substrate that gets stuck onto the mouse |

I feed in the viv and haven't had any problems with it as i don't like to handle my snakes once they have eaten. This is just my way and there is nothing hard and fast about it. If you find a way that works well for you and your snake(s)then stick with it (I always clear a space in the subtrate so there isn't any on the prey). With my garters I have a tile in the viv that the food will sit on..... |

I feed mine out of the viv: 1-stops the snake swallowing substrate, better safe than sorry 2-Hopefully snakes know its feeding time when they get put in their rub I use tongs so i dont get my scent on their food |

I feed mine out of the Viv. I got the baby eating on my arm, I took it out of the box and waved the food in front of it to peek its interest, I then put it on a tray I was going to put it in another tub to feed him But as I reached for the tub he took the food. I just waited for him to swallow it and then placed him back in his box. |

We feed James in the viv and have never had any problems
He has a feeding bowl that he takes the mice off, so he doesn't eat substrate. We don't have to handle or disturb him before or after a feed. And we've never had a problem with him thinking we were mice, he's never struck or acted aggressively towards me.
Do whatever feels right, there's good and bad about both

Wow thanks for all the help guys. If I do by a RUB what size would you suggest for a 18” snake, How do I get him out of the RUB when he has eaten if I am not supposed to handle him, Sorry about all the questions but as I am new to this I thought it better to ask the experts for advice. |

i was stuck on this too! makes sence to feed outside the viv because of many reasons but everything iv read about feeding says not to handle 24-48 hrs after eating. so iv jst been feeding inside the viv n not had any probs with her thinking i was food too! :p aslong as they eat dont think it matters! |

By not handling means dont hold the snake for long periods like you do normally on handling. It is ok to just lift them up and put them back in the viv. |

all of mine are viv fed..even my stroppy corn,
i think they are smart enough to know i smell different to dinner..and i use kitchen roll so never have to worry about substrate
though some would say otherwise.. |

One of mine will ONLY eat in his feeding tub.
It's your preference in regards feeding really. Just what you and snake are happy with.
Also, it's nice to get decent pics when feeding sometimes, so tub feeding can be an advantage there as well.
You don't need a large tub for feeding in, so long as they can fit inside it. My Snow is about 5ft long and he eats in a 18x12 tub. |

Kellog was always fed inside his viv by previous owners so we have continued that (once he started eating with us!), but it is hard to get good feeding shots which I would love. xxx |

My anery female was like that, although the other 2 weren't. She used to be difficult to get out of the viv sometimes.
Just shows that all snakes are different, she used to go for hands in the viv, yet the other 2 didn't. Yet they were all fed in the vivs. |

You will get mixed opinions about this.
I will start in viv feeding on a cereal box cut to fit my viv that will sit on the subtrate, and will have walls so snake wont drag prey onto the sub, as mine thinks its a cobra x rattler at din din's.
It can cause impaction and sometimes death, although aspen is the softest subtrate to use that if snakey swallows it, he has more chance digesting that than a woodchip but still doesnt snake any favours.
Like Phil says, all snakes are different |
