Ive always favored heat mats for my snakes, Apart from the tree boa. But both can be used so its up to you really. |

i always used a bulb by the day and switched that off at night and turned the heat mat on (both being controlled by a temperature thermostat when it was on) a few months ago i went to lost world reptiles in teynham in kent to buy my corn snake a bigger heat mat, as he was struggling to coil on to his present one as he is growing in to a big boy slowly but surely. the shop keeper told me that when a corn snake gets to 3 and a half feet plus they shouldnt be kept on heat mats whether its thermostatically controlled or not, as the weight of a corn snake over 300 grams pressing down on a heat mat can cause some thermal burns and reccomended that i go full time heat bulb from then on, so i ended up buying myself a dimmer thermostat for my heat bulb. his saying was that you cant beat heat bulbs for any reptile as in the wild their heat comes from above, never below. and that the heat from a bulb circulated the entire viv whereas a heat mat only warms that square of the floor in which the mat is. everyone has different opionions on methods and some work better than others, im just saying what i was told. |

I've heard that snakes grow bigger on lamps. maybe because its more natural. but i think its a load of rubbish.
Its really preference i think. |

my big lad is on lamp atm.. might change the royal n lil corn over when they r big enough to go in vivs.. id rather do that than take any sort of risk with heat mats spesh when they reach a hefty size. |

I have a heat lamp at present but will be changing to a mat soon. The mat can be above the floor if in a wooden viv, or you could look into getting a reptile radiator. I use a magic eye Micro climate thermostat. |
