Hey all-
Having returned from a very stressful weekend at a horse show, I felt i had to post a little story about what could have been a very nasty accident!
My loan horse is a very very laid back gelding, about 17hh and weighing 700+ kgs, who has travelled all his life in 2-horse trailers without a problem. Today we left him in the box, a rear facing, side unload job, happily munching a haynet whilst me and his real owner went to look at the showjumping course. It was a calm, sunny day and he had stood for many hours in the box the day before, so we thought that he would be fine.
About 10 minutes later, another one of our teammates came to tell us that Tino was stuck in the trailer with his legs over the breastbar (a thick bar which stops the horse getting where it shouldn't be). Sure enough, when we arrived at the trailer he was completely stuck, with one front leg over the bar, his head and neck forced to the side, and unable to breathe from the pressure of the bar crushing his chest. Immediately we phoned the vet, and started trying to free him by removing the partition and cutting the rope he was tied with. This small bit of freedom caused him to panic and sit on the floor, before lunging forward again and getting his other leg over the bar.
Men were sent to get tools to dismantle the bar, which does not have a safety release system, and the trailer does not come with tools to fit the bolts. Tino meanwhile now had both legs suspended in mid air, unable to breathe and with freely bleeding cuts to his head and legs. Whilst the men were working Tino once again started to thrash around the trailer, endangering the lives of all the people trying to save him, and straining his legs so much we feared they would break under the pressure. Eventually however, he slipped and sat down again, meaning his legs could slide over the bar and he was free! 
Tino escaped with only superficial injuries and bruised pride, but he is lucky he is still alive. We will never know why he did it- the lady next door to us in the lorry park said he became agitated by something, shortly before leaping over the bar. We think he may have been stung by something but who knows...
Tino is the least likely horse in the world to EVER do something like that, and I will never again leave ANY horse unattended in a lorry or trailer. We will be writing to the makers of the trailer to demand an immediate revision of the breastbar system, before another horse makes the same mistake and isnt so lucky.
Let this be a lesson to us all... |

| Phew glad Tino was okay in the end, bet you were really panicking it must have been awful. Bet he was glad to get home to his stable after all that!! |

i knew horse who did something similar to this. But it was in a stable, and he freaked out and kicked through the door. unfortnunatly the injuries to his legs were so sever he bled to death  no one ever worked out what caused a seemilngly docile horse to decide to break throug ha metal lined wooden door |

| too right it was, I thought I was gonna be sick! thankfully Tino is doing great, and enjoying a well earned holiday atm. |
