Hi all! :)

Got some bad news... :(

I may be getting rid of my corn snake due to the fact every time i try to handle it, it shoots off quickly and tail vibrates (Sounds like a helicopter in my room) I have no idea why she is doing this because i always was my hands with soap and cold water so she cannot mistake me by a mouse...

Anyway back to the topic, its got me down as i was excited to have her etc, and it isnt a deffo decision we are going to speak with the shop owner.

But my dad said he may buy me a royal in replacement of the corn :)

Regards,
Blake

corn hatchies are all like that hun, it's just confidence, time and patience.........
believe me you don't want a royal!!
you handle them and they go off their food
you don't get their set-up spot-on they go off their food
if you look at them they go off their food
and even when they start feeding really well.............. yes they go off their food, lol

i agree with gp,thats normal for the snake to rattle,he's just insecure and will get over it with regular handling. If your getting rid because of this minor issue you should have your royal for about 10 minutes before you get rid of that lol

the thing is its not a hatchling, its nearly a year old or is. And it has had regular handling everyday at the shop and with me (except 1 day before feeding, feeding day, and after)

Yeh i was worried with that sort of thing, im just praying that the pet shop owner or someone says "Snakes arnt for you"

ok have read through n understand u being somewhat unnerved by snakeys actions, just think of the animal in the wild it would be doing the same thing only diff is your not trying to eat it. i have a corn who is still quite small n when she tags its quite funny as its more of a head butt... the tail goes n she sits ready to strike again.. but has been fun she is gettin better... have now got a royal it arrived yesterday.. from what has been said they CAN BE WORSE than corns rubbish feeders, finiky sheds.. humidity not right run the risk of RI`S.. list goes on... but hey all part of the care side.. not every animal is gonna wanna be sociable some shy away, some lap it up..but with time patience and perseverance ya can usually get past most things. Tbh once again .. why get a pet if ya not willing to put the hard work in.

love my animals more than i like people.

not a good idead, if you can't handle your corn dont get another snake, let alone a royal. Its getting rid of a dog that growls and replacing it with a pit bull- pointless and a bit stupid.

dont mean to sound rude but ALL snakes will probably be difficult at some point, and corns are super easy...

how long have you had him? he might be nervous about his new surroundings.

and what is a 'tag?' sorry, i'm not as experienced as most of you.

the amazing colour of the cornsnake, as it glides through the feild, never a mistake
so as not to wake
the hapless prey before it, this may as well roll over and close it's eyes as the silent hunter shall always get his prize.
the forked tounge can smell you mouse, red eyes can see you stir, if she does not wake and run now, that will be the end of her.

had it for exactly 1 month tomorrow.

im not scared of snakes at all. i'll try upload a pic of me in sri lanka with a nice sized python :)

its just the tail shakin' and not wanting to get bit i'll just be a maniac like my mate and put my hand in grab her and pull it out...

she never does anything then apart from "Oh look im being handled"

and yeh i sometimes take my time trying to get her, and no its a sliding glass door :)

just perseve with the corn build your confidence up dont worry bout getting tag because you are not a real rep keeper until you get tagged.(im still not a real rep keeper nearly two years into the obsesion still no bites)

Again, perseverance.

Did shop tell you it was handled every day??? If so i'd take that lightly, most shops do not have the time every day to give each rep a decent 15 min+ handling session.

It does sound nervous more than anything, if it's more so when it's in the viv, make a snake hook to help ease it up a bit and keeping the business end away from your free hand until snakie is out.

I have a corn, and she sounded like a pneumatic drill when she rattled her tail...

spent loads of time with her, always making sure she knew i was there before getting her out,

couple of months later and she now handles like a dream..

it just takes a bit of time and effort and you have a great snake..

warning if you want a snake to handle then a royal is not for you..

i have royals and i only handle them once a week, for a maximum of fifteen minutes. very occasionally i may do twice, but that is normally when i am cleaning them out.

They are not really snakes that tolerate handling and as Ali says it takes very little for them to stop feeding..

they in my eyes are not good first time snakes despite what people say, to many ifs and buts with them..

My corn has recently started doing the same thing. She used to be fine being handled but something must have spooked her because recently she seems really unimpressed by me trying to pick her up. I got tagged by her for the first time the other day and to be fair, it wasnt that bad.

What i've started doing now is making sure she knows im there before attempting to pick her up. I place my hand gently in the viv, close enough to her to make her take interest, but not close enough to panic her. If i leave it there a while she tends to calm down and come over for a bit of an investigate and then she seems far calmer when i pick her up. I think it's just a case of being patient with it, mine has good days and bad days, but im hoping soon she'll be used to me handling her again.
Good luck

Good news, fed her two mice instead of the one on wednesday, hopefully that might calm her down she could have been hungry (naughty me!)

Also she did the tail rattling thing whilst eating and didnt strike, she tried to move away so i dont think she will tag me, touch wood!

also read a thread somewhere else on here, it could be because of the heat also.

i'll keep you updated on how things go!

regards,
Blake
