Picked up a rescue on Sunday and as you can see, he has lost quite a lot of his tail. Is there anything I can do to make it more comfortable as is holding it aloft quite a lot?
No open wound and no idea how or when he got it as the previous owners were very unhelpful and probably wouldn't have noticed if he had turned purple. They thought that was normal for a tail and say that he's been like that since they got him four months ago.. But I'm dubious. Also thinking he might be more she judging by what's left of the tail... But we shall see when I get him/her sexed. Anyway, back to topic. I can't imagine it died off longer than four months ago judging by how tentatively it was moving around and holding the tail upright. Settled down more now but still a little concerned. Vet should be doing home visit next week (fingers crossed) xxx
I'm glad you've got the vet coming round. I know of others that have had their snake's tail tips drop off and they haven't mentioned a reaction like this. In fact it's as though the snake barely noticed. I guess if it had a build up of shed on more than the tip of its tail then it will feel it more and it will take longer to heal.
Vet cant come round till after Christmas :( such an awkward time of year for this to happen! However, less worried now as I had him/her (thinking its a her) out today and she was slithering around pretty happily and rarely lifted her tail from the floor... thinking that perhaps a clean environment and proper care has started to ease it off. The end is still a little black but having spoken to a vet on the phone he thinks this should clear with the next shed and thinks that it may be sore as there is still dead tissue on the end waiting to drop off. I'll keep you updated!
Sorry the vet can't come sooner but it seems as though it's not bothering her as much, which is a good thing. If she'd shed soon before you got her it had probably torn at the tail a bit, making it sore again. It can sometimes take a few sheds for all of the damage to come off.
As you might have seen in my other post, she's in blue now -.- The vet is coming round after her shed now.. As had to postpone. Damn snakes not cooperating with my plans!
