I kept rats at the same time as having snakes. I kept them in separate rooms but the rat smell does travel a lot (especially if you get slobby boys like my trio were).
To begin with, all my corns went a bit nuts (roaming the viv all the time, tongues going like mad) but they got used to it and as long as I didn't handle a rat then handle a snake, it had no noticeable effects once they got used to it. Apparently washing hands with soap isn't enough to get the smell off, my snakes would still strike if I had handled a rat within an hour or so of handling them (even though my corns get mice not rats).
It's the same with my geckos. When I first got them, the snakes were a bit interested for a bit, smelling food I guess. Now as long as I don't handle a gecko before I handle a snake, they don't seem to even notice anymore
Rats are totally awesome pets and it didn't cause a problem for me |
