Hey everyone, thanks for letting me join, I picked my 1st corn up yesterday and he seems to be settling in fine. He is about a year old from what I can make out on its feeding chart and the fact it is on smalls. Just got a few quick questions, I have everything setup but the temperature seems to fluctuate alot even though my heat mat is controlled by a thermostat and digital thermometer, could this be because the mat is in a special space under the viv which was designed for the mat? Temperature is between 27-30C. And another is the depth that the substrate should be? He seemed to spend all night in the cool side of the viv too is that normal? |

Hi and welcome to the forum
I found that my temps fluctuated +-5 degrees with a standard stat, I upgraded to a pulse stand and it now only fluctuates +-0.2 degrees.
My little one also spends most of his time in the cool end, they will move about when and if heat is needed to keep there body temp regulated. The substrate can be as deep as you like on the cool side if he likes to burrow, a fine sprinkling on the heat mat side is recommended to allow the heat through easier. |

Hi and welcome, and going to take a guess and say you have a micro climate stat. The on/off stats can have quite a variance between their 'on' temp and 'off' temp. If the range bothers you, you can swap to a pulse stat, I have micro climates and the range has never bothered my boys. As long as your warm end is the correct temp I wouldn't worry about him,he'll know where is the best stop for him. One more thing: Pics are a must here ;-) |

Yes I have a micro climate stat, I wil just wait and see how he gets on with the current thermostat and I will get a picture soon once I can get him fully out of his hide as my phone never seems to get a good picture of him compared to the ones everyone else puts up :P

Hi and Welcome.
As Lupi Lou said if it is an on off stat this is quite normal, and as long as your not going over 30oC you should be fine. Are the two hides you have in the hot and cold end the same? Sometimes snakes have a preferred hide as they feel more secure in it. You could try swapping the hides over but as long as the temps are right i wouldnt worry too much, your snake isn't stupid, if it needs to move it will!
Welcome once again and do ask questions as you need too! |
