The mat should cover about a third up to half floor space. If it does and you have a thermometer and a thermostat then I don't see an issue.

How big is that mat? It will be fine if it covers the right floor space and you have a stat, we cannot stress enough how important the stat is :)

The wattage simply applies to the size, so a larger mat will be a larger wattage. As above just go by the size needed to provide 1/3 to 1/2 the size of the snake's home. If the snake is in a faun or a rub which is on top of the mat then it doesn't matter if the mat is a little too large as it's OK to leave the extra sticking out ;)

I put a sheet of polystyrene under the mat to reflect the heat back up. You do need a small air gap between the faun/rub bottom and the mat of a few mm though. Have a look here, excellent thread on setting up :) http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9878

I think I'll just set up without then leave it for a few days and make sure it stays at the same temp and see how I go. Thanks :-)

I didn't know that! How do you know if the air gap is needed - does it specify on the mat instructions?
