Hi all, I've just check the temperature gradients of my viv, above the heat mat (with thermostat set to turn off at 29#730;C) is about 22#730;C and at the other end of the viv 19#730;C. Would a larger heat mat solve this problem so I can get a 30-20 temperature gradient?
turn the thermostat up until you get a temp gradient averaging 28 degrees at the hot end to 21/22 at the cooler end. Some stats are not set right for example my stat is set to 25 degrees but the digi thermometer reads up to 29 degrees.
you say above the heat mat. but what is the heatmat itself. is this in a viv or is the heat mat under a faun/rub. how much substrate is there over the heat mat?
The thermometers are just over the substrate. Am I better putting them underneath it? The substrate is paper towels and there's one sheet of towel over the heat mat, three on the other end of the viv. The snake is staying within his little box inside the viv as only a hatchling at the moment, but want to make sure he won't be too cold in it (I've placed it half off the heat mat, half on).
Oh, and the viv is wooden so the heat mat is inside the viv.
Just put that thermometer right on top of the heat mat (with a bit of paper towel on top) and it is reading 27.6 Celsius. That's better. Thank you for that bit of advice :) , really did help loads.
what you have to remember is the snake will burrow to the mat an lay on the mat in a viv. so its always the temp of the mat itself you want to monitor. would tweek it up a little if was mine.
