Thanks to my daughter's science teacher, my daughter has developed an interest in corn snakes. Her teacher keeps one in the science lab. After months of careful consideration and research (and waiting in case this was a passing phase!) we finally relented and are letting her have one of her own. We are in the process of setting up the equipment and are looking around for the right snake. We saw this one yesterday, which she has fallen in love with. But I was wondering about the different colour on the head and tail, is this normal? We weren't able to pick it up yesterday, as it had recently fed, but are going back tomorrow for a closer look. What should we be looking for? Any advice greatly appreciated! This is all very new to me.

Hi! Corn snakes are great pets. Don't worry about the colouration, they come in all different 'morphs' (colours basically) and patterns. This is a little carolina, or normal, corn snake.
I would ask for feeding and shedding records if they have any. Ask if she/he is a good shedder/feeder/toileter. These are the main things I would think! Someone else will probably be along shortly with more info for you.
For just now though, here are a few links which might help get you started:

The links are an excellent start for a first time owner. The hatchling is a normal/carolina/wild type. As it grows up it will change colour to become a very pretty snake with autumn colours... Cornsnakes come in a wide variety of colours (called morphs) and they do look different as hatchlings. With each shed the colour slowly changes until they get their mature adult colour. Some people are very surprised by this, especially those who get a black and white anery that becomes more greyish brown! As Freddiesmum said you need to ask for feeding records, shedding records etc. If you are thinking of buying from a store they may not keep such detailed records as a breeder. Stores also charge a lot more for snakes. One thing I would advise is to get your snakes home set up and running for a week before you get the snake. That way if there are any temperature issues you can sort them out without stressing a little snake out. If you are interested I do have some hatchlings myself that are ready for homing. They are caramel ones. I'm near Saffron Walden. Good luck with your new snake when he/she arrives. |

Thank you so much for your responses. Very reassuring. So grateful for this forum!
I was just concerned about the greyish colour on the tip of the head, and the dull colours on the tail. Glad to hear this is normal.
I should have thought to ask on here if anyone had hatchlings for sale. Saffron Walden is not too far from us at all, but I think she now has her heart set on this one. We will see how it goes tomorrow!

Hello and welcome to the forum. Lovely little snake there, it doesn't look like there's anything wrong with the colour, many hatchlings are darker on the tail. My guess is it'll develop more orange tones , as it grows. Should the grey areas look like they've got a lifted edges to them, it could be retained shed...but it's difficult to say from photos.
Little hatchlings can be a bit jumpy, fast, and nervous, and can even try to nip ( which doesn't hurt at all and doesn't do any damage ), but that's normal - we're so much bigger than them, after all. They will calm down in time. Just something to bear in mind, if your daughter's very young.
Otherwise they make very good pets - they're quiet, they don't smell, they're clean, undemanding, hardy, very inexpensive to look after, once you have the set up. They get used to being handled - but don't mind if you don't handle them, either.
Just a word of warning, though- you might like the little snaky so much, you might want to get another... once you find out, how many different colours and patterns there are... :-)

Thank you all for such a warm welcome. We went back to see the snake today and we all held it. My daughter was beaming. Here is a photo of her holding it. All the equipment arrived this afternoon, so we will be spending the next few days setting it up and checking that it all works. Hopefully bringing the snake home next week. And that's something I NEVER though I'd be saying, LOL!

Thanks Sankeysal. That's reassuring to know. Still a little nervous about it all, as it's the first pet we will have owned as a family. My daughter is so excited. Feel a bit sorry for her, as none of her friends share her enthusiasm. Two wouldn't even look at the photo! |
