Hi everyone,
I'm new to the forum and I have to say I'm really pleased there is a forum specified for corn snakes! :)
I got my very first snake last Tuesday. To say I was super excited as much as anxious was an understatement!
Yogi was born in May of this year and is a Hypomelanisic male.
Yogi's last recorded shed, from the pet shop records, was the 7th July..I believe he is in shead/blue now as there is a film over both his eyes and he is looking a little dull in colour.
His last feed was at the pet shop, last Sunday. So he is due today. I defrosted the pinkie in luke warm water and the popped in into his terrainium. The pet shop stated he is currently a drop feeder.
Unfortunately he has not taken his feed. A little while after I lifted off his hide and offered the pinkie to him, there was lots of tongue flicking but again unfortunately he did not take it.
I have left the pinkie in there and was wondering how long is long enough, before removing it?
Also when do I next try a feed with another defrosted pinkie?
I know that snakes can go off their food before/during shed and as this is his first feed since coming to his new home, this also adds to the fact why he may not have taken his feed.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the forum!
I wouldn't worry too much, when snakes are in blue they are at their most vulnerable, in the wild they would be hidden away not out hunting for food! I wouldn't leave it in too long as it will breed bacteria over time. Some snakes will happily take food in blue, but many wont and this is normal. If he doesn't take it I would wait till he sheds and then try again. Don't worry about the missed feed either. To be honest most owners leave their snakes for 7 days once they get them regardless of when they are due a feed!

| Hi and welcome, as Redware said, most corns go off their food while in blue - mine does and he's normally a very reliable feeder. I personally wouldn't leave the pinkie in any longer than overnight, as it's like to go off. If it were me I would wait until the day after he sheds to offer again :) |

Hi everyone thank you so much for the welcome and the advice.
I took the pinkie out a couple of hours after putting it in and will try again after the shed. Fingers crossed ;) How long does it take for a snake to shed? I have not picked Yogi up today as I do not want to cause him any further stress. As he is hiding out in his hide it is hard to see how far he has come on, shed wise, since yesterday?
I would like to say it is a great relief that this forum exists :) I know where to come for advice, as I said this is my very first snake and despite reading, looking up and talking to other reptile owners, I still feel completely anxious! |

| Hello and welcome after your snakes colours return almost normal it will shed in anything from 3-7 days but there is no real set time for this to happen |

I'm new to the snakey world too. I panicked when I first got mine, she wouldn't eat (though tongue flicking etc) but gave her a few days to really settle in. After letting her snuggle in my sleeve for a bit I put her back...went to check on her half hour later and she'd shed!! Doesn't take them long at all, it really surprised me a)because i thought it'd take them longer to actually shed b) she showed no signs of being in blue. She ate happily the day after though :) |

Hello and welcome, Yogi's a lovely snake. Very likely, he will eat for you after he's shed :-)
If you feed in the evening, and leave the pinkie in overnight, he's more likely to take it. If it's not gone by morning, it'll need to be thrown away, as by then, it'll start going off. It helps if you warm the pinkie up a little.
