Maybe due to shed, feels uncomfortable due to constipation or just simply isn't in the mood to be held at the times that you do :)

Perhaps your hands smell a bit different?I always wash with the same soap before, then have a bit of a rummage about in the substrate first-you know spot cleaning-so I smell familiar
But could be poop

Aw well, best i could say then is keep an eye, if the snake looks quite swollen around the rear end you could maybe try a warm bath to ease and allow release of the bowels aha.

As I am a newbie not sure whether I am barking up the right tree but thought I might throw a few questions into the pot:

Does she rattle her tail at you when you go to get her out?
Does she try to get away when you go to get her out or does she let you pick her up initially with no struggle?
Has the night time viv temp been considerably hotter than usual in this warm weather.
Have you been exposed to any strong odours that you wouldn't have been previously?..for instance mine hates the smell of cigarette smoke and goes mental if I have it on me.

You could try putting a towel on your arm and letting her crawl under it.. that might make her feel more comfortable.

Or like Scary says... could be she needs a poop!

Would be an interesting experiment to see if she is ok if you handle her having not been near the dog and with fresh clothes on.

Hope all goes well.

Hi Yalovit,

I've had this with my Cali King. From day one she has been a tricky snake. First with the tail rattling then with the spraying fluids. We still now have ups and downs. But much more mellower.

I think its down to getting used to you. Have you changed your soap lately or detergent?

My Cali King has calmed down. I left a pair of my socks in her vivarium that had been worn for around a week. I also now always use anti-bacterial hand wash before and after handling and always stick to the same brand. It has a very strong scent.

With everything its perseverance. She was always getting stressed out, but now she comes to me when I open her vivarium (well not always but in most cases she gets nosey). Take things a step at a time. Leave the vivarium door open and wait until she comes to you. Small, but often handling worked for me. Also be wary about picking her up, as she may be sleeping. They have no eye lids.

I also found that coming up to shedding she was particular unhappy with handling sessions.

Like everyone else has pointed out, could be she needs a clear-out. But you can usually spot this as there will be noticeable lump near her anal vent area. I've also observed that both my snakes will lift their tails horizontally just before they go and when they have finished.

I suppose your dog, could also be a problem. As it may be aware of its presence and see it as a predator. (but I cant comment on this as I have no other pets)

shes definitely pooing im starting to think its when I lift her back to my hand after she has started to wander she doesn't like being pulled back.i think shes thinking I want to explore and don't want to stay in your hands.shes growing up now mabee I should give her more freedom lol

Mine can get a bit hysterical when being handled but what I have found is that if I put a towel or something over my arm she will just hide underneath it. Similarly she will quite often make a bid for the inside of my shirt, somewhere I believe she feels safe as it's warm and dark (and plenty of padding underneath lol).
I've found that if I just let her do her thing she gets calmer but you can tell after @ 20 minutes she's had enough.

You could try the towel thing or indeed let her explore inside your shirt.

I she a "hidey" snake in general... spending more time out of site than cruising the viv?

This is typical behaviour in all new snakes. Just give it time and keep handling sessions often but in small duration and you'll get there.

George was flighty but after regular handling is fun to spend time with.

Snake's don't generally enjoy being handled, it's more that they tolerate it. She will get more tolerant the more used to you she becomes. 4 months is still early days
