Worried and be cool for opinions on my adopted corn Mia found in my hall early one morning two weeks ago roughly. The only help we could get was from our local reptile shop who said he'd take a look and see what we had found and offer board and lodgings for a while to see if we could work out from where she had come from but after going to visit her and see she was ok then handling her and learning that she wasn't a highly deadly poisonous death monster that she first seemed at 06:00 while strolling down stairs in ya knickers to make tea before work and waking the neighbours screaming like a complete wuss there's a kin snake in the house, fell for Mia. The chap at the shop suggested he'd keep an eye on her for a week and I should think about it, plus give time to see if we found her owner. All good week one, but she didn't feed. Second week and into the shop for starter viv all we needed to start her new home basically, cool even matched the unit already in place with my fish on. Mia, nice and active exploring testing for exits temps seem good didn't handle or try to feed or anything really just enjoyed watching did have plenty of hideaways but she was all over without a care or worry or that's how it seemed. Thought I'd get her a nice snake cave and moss to whence she has retired and not really been out since. The thing is I'm trying not interfere but I have no way of knowing when Mia last fed I have had a little peek and her eyes where grey and cloudy but she did wake and lots of tongue flicking to witch I put the lid back and left her alone but can't help worrying now cos I'm nearly certain she hasn't been out at all for at least three days so when should I really start to panic and how much longer should I be prepared to leave her in the hide? The chap at the shop said she seemed healthy not although not eaten seemed good weight and me taking her home would be fine but just seems funny the change from being very out and about to staying in the hide. She is thought to be 12 to 18 month old. Your opinions would be gratefully received? Thanks you.

Sounds like she's due to shed so will be more likely to stay in a hide. They feel insecure as when their eyes blue over they can't see very well, her eyes will clear and then she will shed a few days later, then she may want to eat. Don't worry though, they can go many many months without eating and still be fine. Leave her in peace, make sure she's got water and you'll probably find a discarded snake skin in her viv in a few days.

Just for the record, you mentioned getting her a cave and moss - it can be helpful to them to have a damp hide when due to shed (that's probably why she's staying in it) but once shed you should remove the moss as it is too damp for them to be kept in all the time :)

Good luck, hopefully she will shed in 1 piece for you, then offer her a feed after she has shed :)

Thanks, reassuring I think, just shocked at how quick it happened plus not having any of her history doesn't help.

Jees me again, really thankful for all your advice, and I'm not sure if this should be a new topic although it isn't, to get replies? Kinda new to the forum thing does anyone think I should remove the moss from her hide, fifth day of not coming out or movement, I've tried arranging the chippings around her water to check for movement when we aren't about really nothing is moving! Torn between checking on her or trying not to disturb her does any of this behaviour sound normal? Really don't want to be a pest with this but if something was wrong i don't want to be sat watching n waiting when I should be doing something. smart bunny commented on removing the moss not that was my plan too after she shed but I'm not even sure she is getting ready to shed anyway, now I am going to sound thick but when she was up and about her eyes did look greyed over but when she seemed to what I understand as wake up they cleared!

It sounds normal to me. Some corns just prefer to hide. Again she is still new and it can take a fair while to get used to a new home.
About her shedding though im unsure.

It is normal for them to go into blue and the eys cloud over for a bit, then the eyes clear up, then they shed within the next few days, so hang in there, she should shed for you very soon :D

Oh, and leave the moss in until she has shed, I'm sure you were right ;)

Worry over, it's always exciting the first time. I never see mine, from several days before they go dark, till they shed. They prefer to hide away. I was so freaked out, when Baz was a baby and was going blue for the first time - because she wouldn't come out, wouldn't move - I even found her coiled with her head laid on the side - I thought she was dead! Nope, just blue :-)

That would also explain why Mia didn't want to eat, some snakes don't eat when blue, and many don't even poop, and wait until they shed - then there's a nice huge smelly "present" as well... :-)
Fingers crossed she'll feed for you tonight.

Awww that's brilliant news, especially that she ate as well - see, you are a natural snake keeper - even though you've only just got her you realised she was in blue :P
