I've just had double success with my "Be nice to nice spideys" quest.

Invited my neighbour in to meet my new guests. Her boy has already met and handled the snakes but still uncertain about animals with too many legs.

At first neither was very keen but after 5 minutes of watching how it didn't tear my fingers out, Mum braved it out and went for it. Yay!!

After a further 5 minutes of chatting about how they grow and moult, the clincher was how posing for a photo while holding a real Tarantula would be a first amongst his pals, build up 'street cred' and he'd be a Wow! with the girls.

As you can see ... it worked! He now thinks spiders are 'Real Cool'.

Rachel, that is a look of fascination. Your Charlie should be just as gentle so just put your hand flat in front and give a gentle nudge from the rear and just let him walk onto your hand. Biggest fear folk seem to have is that they expect it to scamper up their arm. These docile T's don't move much more that twice their leg span before settling down. So go for it and remember the photos.

They were both admiring the colours of Esmerelda, the bigger Chile Rose, when she gave a wee 'yawn' and started polishing her rather impressive 'fork & spoon'. That was it!! T handling session over and time to move onto the snake department.

Graeme, you will have more chance with a box of Milk Tray and a bunch of flowers.

Moppet, thanks. This one is even gentle with the crickets.

Chris, you need to get out more.

Honest folks, Mum was brand new and not nervous in the least. She is actually talking about it not being what she expected. Blame the photographer.

I really don't like spiders at all, but there's something nice about that one, maybe it's the colour and the fact is looks smooth rather than hairy

"but there's something nice about that one, maybe it's the colour and the fact is looks smooth rather than hairy"

Now think very, very carefully before answering the following question:

Are you a hairist? If so, I may have to put you at the very bottom of my Potential Christmas Card List!

Not phobic, like most folk they just had the wrong preconceptions. Just like slimy snakes.
I purposely chose this one because of the nice colours and general looks. She's a wee beauty.

Ha ha, I used to be a goth with huge hair, so not anti hairy I worked in a pet shop years ago, and my first day in the reptile section was to clean out the tarantulas. The one that freaked me out the most (probably because I let it escape and it ran like the clappers along the floor) was a huge bird eating spider, and he was very hairy lol.

Ha-ha-ha! You probably freaked the poor wee beasty more than it freaked you. See what I mean about wrong preconceptions.

Due to the extended cold season up here I haven't had my spring shearing yet. I look like a cross between Darwin, a Viking Raider and a dedicated fan of ZZ Top.
My sister gave an honest opinion (as sisters always do) that I looked like an old jakey.

There is a report in the local newspaper of potential sightings of a Scottish Yeti prowling the cycle track. Police have advised caution and not to approach it but to call the SSPCA who are well equipped and experienced in the capture of exotic animals.
