Charlie is in a tub approx 10" x 6" approx 4"-5" high. He has humus brick as his substrate which has been moistened and dried back out. A small flower pot as a hide and a few silk leaves for coverage. He has a plastic milk bottle top for a small water bowl. He keeps sitting in one corner the furthest away from the heat source so I am guessing he feels it is to warm for him, currently sitting at 25.5c. His warmth is provided by the top of a viv (viv has a basking bulb in). I am slightly concerned that there is a small amount of condensation appeared on one side of the lid of the tub, the side nearest the hottest part of the tub. I have read that some people spray there chacos but others say that this is not needed and just a small water bowl is all that is required and condensation is a bad thing for a chaco. Didn't think I would worry so much but he looks so fragile lol. HELP please. |

I would not bother with any heat source, particularly a basking type lamp. Ordinary room temperature should be fine. If any heating was required then a small heatmat attached to the side of the enclosure is the recommended way. I just re-read and see that you are heating from sitting on top of another viv. I'd move it onto an unheated surface.
Never spray the T directly with water, they do not like it. Refill the water dish daily and lightly mist the substrate, just enough to knock down the stoor.
What sort of ventilation is on the tub? It might need a few more holes. |

We have put a few holes along each side and the lid is completely covered in holes, don't think there is any more space on the lid for more. I have moved him away from sitting on top of the viv and his temps are now sitting at 24.3c and the condensation seems to be decreasing. It was only a very small amount on one side of the lid but its hardly noticeable now. Since his temp has dropped he is moving around more now and not hugging the one corner don't know if this is just coincidence though.
Sorry if I am being thick but what do you mean by 'lightly mist substrate, just enough to knock down the stoor'? Can't say I have heard of that before. |

Looks like it might have been a bit too warm for it. A bit of natural temperature variation over day through night is preferable to a 24 hour constant temperature. My room temperature normally sits around the 20 - 24*C during the day and drops off at night
The biggest mistake that folk make is having the substrate too damp, even soggy. Most T's prefer things to be on the dry side.
Misting: Use a fine trigger spray filled with plain water to just lightly dampen down the substrate. An occasional squirt on the inside of one wall will leave some droplets for easy drinking. Just do the misting every 3 or 4 days and adjust to suit the weather if we ever get a hot summer.
Another thing to do is actually overfill the water dish to have a slightly damp area around the dish. Just a wee splash is all that is needed. |

Thanks Alan. The temperature drops off to around 20c-21c at night and slowly climbs to around 24c throughout the day now that he has been moved from the warm vivarium top. |
