| So, my snake Deigo likes to talk o.O This is surprising t me, as I wasn't aware snakes could make noise apart from hissing (although this is something similar,I think). It's a weird little 'huff', with a squeaky undertone to it. He mainly does it when he's looking for lady snakes, or being handled by someone he likes. At least, I assume he likes them, he's a lot more settled on those people than on strangers. I think it's totally adorable, but I'm a bit concerned it's not normal. Might it actually be a sign of an underlying respiratory problem? It's impossible to tell when he is going to make the sound, and it's so quiet it would be impossible to get a recording. It's only occasionally, not with every breath. He otherwise seems healthy, he's active and alert and loves coming out for cuddles. My other one never makes a sound. Any ideas? |

I'm not sure Silverwings. I know they do make different noises, but as far as I know it's only rarely. Silvi does start to sneeze just before she goes blue and I have heard Kellog do a sort of 'huff' but only once or twice.
I wouldn't have thought its anything to worry about, as long as he's not showing any signs of being ill. Signs of a respiratory infection (RI), which is what you need to look out for, are wheezing,sneezing,mucus from the nose and mouth, breathing through the mouth instead of the nose, lethargy and being able to hear a rattling noise when youre holding him. I'm only telling you this to reassure you that it isn't that  !!
It could be that he has some retained shed in his nostrils, that isn't an issue but is causing him to make the noise, or dust from his substrate.
I'll be interested to see what others have to say.

Perfectly normal and I assume it to be a sign of contentment, much like a cat purring.
I've heard it often with my Grey Rat, MBK and Big Taggart. Usually they are relaxed, draped around my shoulder and having a snuffle around my head.
As long as they active and eating normally and there are no other signs of poor health, then nothing to be concerned about.  |

| He's still off his food, but he's definitely lady snake hunting and since he's very overweight I'm not too concerned yet. It's only been a month, I've tried rat pups as well as his normal mice but he's not interested at all. |

Don't worry about being off the food if he's only been off for a month, that's nothing to an adult Corn. They can fast for anything up to 5 months with no harm. If he is over-weight then it will probably do him some good.
Have you any full body shots and his weight to get an idea of how much over-weight he actually is? |

That's really interesting Auld Baldy, it's not something I've ever experienced....but then mine don't often stay still enough near my ear for me to hear  .
Kellog hasn't eaten since beginning of February, except for 1 small mouse which I managed to tempt him with mid-March but that's all. Still nose rubbing and glass dancing, even as I type .

I have a mixture of 5 of my lot doing the snakey shakes. All at different stages of refusing to eat. Worst at the moment is the Carpet Python, only two large mice and one knuckle sandwich  since last December. Normally he demolishes a small (110 gram) rat every week. I'm hoping he'll take another mouse this week-end and get back to rats in the next week or two. |

| When one of my guys was fat he used to huff and puff a lot, specially when he came out for handling the poor fatty. Long as there's no bubbles and all looks healthy its fine and normal. |
