i bought a baby corn snake yesterday and got a starter set up plastic tank. Fanarium I think its called. the person in the shop set the habistat to 28'c. I have set the tank up and the snake has been in there for 24 hours. He has two hides, one where the heat mat is and the other on the other side of the tank. I have placed a thermometer on the floor inside the tank, and it only reads 23'c. I was wondering if it is taking the temperature of the base of the tank of the temperature in the air. Also the snake has been in the hide on the colder side of the tank and has not come out at all as I am aware of, is this normal.

Hi and welcome,
What type of thermometer are you using is it a digital one, also where have you placed your thermostat prob? If you haven't got a digital thermometer I would recommend you get one as the are much more accurate. It is normal for snakes to hide away, although as said I would use a digital thermometer to check your hot end temps just to make sure that they are correct. |

| it is not a digital thermometer, it is called EXO TERRA. It is just a round disk that can stick on the side of the tank, but the person in the store just told me to place it on the floor in the tank. The probe is placed underneath the tank on top of the heat mat. With the set up I also got a bag of aspen bedding, but was told just to layer kitchen paper for the first few weeks then start using the bedding. My corn snake is 6 months old. |

| The dial thermometers are not very accurate. You would be best getting a digital thermometer to measure the temperature of the warm part of your faun as the dials on the stats can be inaccurate for temperature too. Kitchen roll can make spotting poop a lot easier for a small corn snake and it can be helpful to use it for a few weeks until you know what is normal for you snake. I use aspen with all my snakes currently but when they were very small, I used kitchen roll for a little while. |

| ok thank you I will carry on with the kitchen paper. How much am I looking at for a digital thermometer. This is my first snake so I want to get everything right. I was just a little worried as I havnt seen it moving around the faun yet. I have a baby's video monitor just to see the moment when it goes out to explore. |

If you have a look on ebay sometimes you can get them for just a couple of quid. I get the exo terra ones because they have a maximum and minimum function so you can see the variation in temperature not just at the moment you look at the screen  They cost a little more (around a tenner?), depending on where you get them from.
Corn snakes normally spend most of their time hiding and it has just moved into a new home with new scents, sounds etc so it will probably hide even more than normal until it feels settled and safe enough to explore. It also depends on the snake itself, some snakes are more shy than others too
Worry about the wellbeing of your snake is a good sign, it shows you care. We've all had our share of worries and paranoia, it's a good thing and it's pretty normal too |

| Best way to do it is use a rubber band and band the thermostat probe and thermometer probe together then place them inside the faun under the warm hide and under the bedding that way your getting the right readings thats i do it and my highest temps is 31 and lowest is around 29.4 mark |

| If you already have the stat probe on the mat outside the faun that is fine, no need to change things, it's the thermometer probe which then needs to go on the floor on the warm side to see what the max temp is. Although you have the thermostat set to 28 it is highly unlikely you will get that temp as the stats are known for being unrelible in this particular aspect - use the digital thermometer to measure the temp then set the stat temp accordingly :) |

| I picked him up today and he was quite lively going through my hands. When I put him back in his faun I left him for a while. Then at 10pm tonight I got him back out again so I could clean out his poo and give him some fresh water. I dangled a pinkie in front of him, he was sniffing it and his tongue was going quite a bit but he didn't seem that interested. I put the pinkie inside the tank turned the light off and went back downstairs. I have been watching him on my baby monitor and he has been exploring alot which I am pleased about. I though he had escaped because he went to the top of the tank where the lid is but he was just lying up there quite funny. He then went back to the pinkie and has now ate it bottom side down. He is now lying underneath the the kitchen paper maybe because it is more warm there. |

It very much depends on temperature. It can be as little as 2 days, when they sit in warm hide ( 28 - 29 C ), or it could be 5 days on cold side ( around 20 -21 C ). If it's too cold, they can't digest at all.
The best is to leave them completely alone, no handling , for 48 hours after the feed. I leave mine alone, until they've pooped. |
