Saphira had an oviduct prolapse recently, for which she had surgery and is now on antibiotics (as described in this thread: http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=28417&whichpage=1). Last night, she shed, which was quite a hassle for her. Most of it got off in the end, except directly underneath the stitches.

After she shed, I noticed 3 scales that seemed to have lost pigment. They didn't look any different from normal scales upon closer inspection, so I figured it was just one of those weird colour changes I've read about on the forum in the past. Checking up on her again this evening, though, I noticed that the scales have gone all dry. The area doesn't appear to be sore, but it's far from normal:

Has anyone ever seen anything like this before? It doesn't look like the typical cases of scale rot I've seen, but could that be it? Or is it something else that one of you knows of? I have a scheduled follow-up call with the vet tomorrow, so I'll ask her about it, but any information before then on what I can do to get any treatment started would be appreciated.

My boy has this too. No idea what it's from, but he's kind of always had it. Perhaps it's a minor burn? [:S]

I've never injected it there personally, but maybe the vet did it after the operation.

I only ask, because I vaguely remember reading something about certain antibiotic, causing tissue die back in snakes at the injection site. It's most likely not this, but I'd just keep an eye on it, just in case, and if it seems to be getting worse and involve the tissue underneath, I'd have it checked. Hopefully, and most likely it isn't, so please don't let this worry you. It could also be something, that happen related to the op.

Yea, that might be it. If that's the case, then I don't think there's anything that can be done except give it time and hope it doesn't scar too much.

The good thing is - she's on antibiotics - so at least you know, that whatever it is, at least it's not likely to get infected :-)

Have been following this thread but didn't comment because I didn't know anything . What did the vet say Eline?

The vet said it's indeed likely to be from the antibiotics and that there's nothing I can do to treat it. I'll just have to wait until it gets better by itself. Quite annoying, not being able to do anything :(

I'm sorry to hear that, I wish I could find the thread - it was about year, year and a half ago. I tried entering " baytril" into the search, but couldn't find it :-(

I seem to remember there was one type of antibiotic, that did this, and I think baytril didn't, but I can't be 100% sure. Is she on the same type of antibiotic now, that the vet injected after the op? I'd keep an eye on your injection sites, just in case. Hope she's ok, and at least she's eating :-)

It wasn't baytril though, but that one does seem to cause tissue damage as well. The one they used for Saph was TMPS

I think baytril was the one that doesn't cause damage ( but don't quote me on it ), I don't know TMPS.

Do we have any vets/ vet nurses on the forum? Or does any long standing member remember the thread - I think the guy that posted it was either in the army, or ex army, and his wife ( or girlfriend ) worked as a vet nurse, or in the veterinary lab? I was trying to remember his username, but can't , it really bugging me now. He used to post a lot on here...

I might have found something - I searched the dark side, too, and found an old post by Mikerichards - I think that was him - saying that it WAS baytril, that could cause problems, when injected. So, hopefully, it should be ok :-) Sorry for all the kerfufle, but at least Saph should be ok. :-)

I was just thinking - it would be nice, if we had a reptile specialist vet as a member of this forum...

I know it's annoying that there isn't anything you can do Eline, but what's important is that it isn't anything like scale rot or something else more serious. I don't know if it will slowly repair with subsequent sheds or will always be that colour, but it really doesn't matter.....Saphira has been through so much already and this is a small side-effect of that, but it could be so much worse.

Actually, I think it would add a bit of character if she kept those white scales (as long as they don't bother her). I'll be happy whatever the outcome though. I love her to bits, no matter what she looks like :)
