| Hmm, sounds like a rude pun.. Anyway, I like to handle Danno, my 5 month old corn at least every day, sometimes more than once. He doesn't seem to mind, in fact I think he quite likes the attention.. I obviously leave him well alone after a feed, (48hrs). Do i handle him too much? How often do you all handle yours for? |

| I handle mine for about 20 minutes most days. I would say that it just depends on the snake if he's happy with it then I can't see that there would be a prob :) |

I handle Sheldon most days but I wait until he is "out and about" in his terrainium then I open the lid and wait till he comes out, as cornelious says it really depends on the snake and if he seems fine and settled then it should be fine.  happy handling!! |

As the others have said, if Danno is happy with it, go for it. My Cathy loves being handled (I have to admit, I leave her 60 hours post feed to handle her but that is only as she is a known regurger). The longest she has spent out of the viv (and she is only a tiddler) is 2 hours. I think she fell asleep on me watching a film!
Cathy already lets me know if she doesn't want to "play". I find if I hold her near her viv for little while at first she will either go back in on days she doesn't want handling, or up my arm to freedom on days she wants to come out and play for a while.
I handle Cathy every day myself, sometimes 3 or 4 times as she is a beggar for knocking one of her hides against the glass to get my attention (she usually does this when new people come in the room as she really loves meeting new people - strange girl!). |

| Cool. I'll keep on getting him out then.. Although I have promised the old lady I won't get him out when we have guests without asking them first. We've already had a few "friends" say they won't come round anymore because of Danno.. Some people.. |

Ive had that a lot and now most of those people are actually quite keen on the snakes some people are just plain ignorant others misinformed and others are phobic which is fair enough but ive even helped some of those out lol at the end of the day dont let others likes and dislikes dictate what you do or dont keep sod em .. |

Well I think the part in bold is completely understandable. We have had friends round who are nervous of our snakes and the dogs (we used to have 2). I don't think it is fair to expect others to 'put up' with having your pets shoved in their face - but I expect you will find that when asked lots of them will probably be interested - it's just not fair on those who aren't not to respect their wishes. We never let our dogs jump all over people for example as not everyone is too keen on that!
One of my best friends is now really nervous about coming in the house as she is badly phobic, but she still makes an effort and steels herself to visit - so I reciprocate and cover the vivs over 
Just out of interest - did the friends say they weren't coming over just at being told you had a snake, or after coming over and you getting him out? If I knew someone who had a tarantula it would not put me off going to visit them in the slightest - but if they then got that tarantula out without warning me I'd be saying goodbye pretty sharpish lol! As Paulie says, don't let others' views of the snakes put you off keeping them, but consider their feelings when they are guests in your house as well. When we have people over I usually wait to see if they mention the snakes - some do and I then ask if they would like to see them (usually yes) others obviously don't mention them at all, so neither do I |

| my dad's wife said she would rather eat her own poop than come back in my house now that I have a snake, you can't even tell there is a snake in the terrainium during the day it just looks like a tank of aspen. but I totally agree with respecting people's phobias etc and never get Sheldon out without checking my guests are ok with him |

I don't think you're handling too much at all. As long as your snake isn't stressed out and you'd soon know if he didn't like it.
I handle mine every day, apart from post-feed.
I only get the snakes out if any visitors want to see them. The same goes for all my reptiles.
It's the owners that don't respect other people's feelings about reptiles that get us all a bad name....shame on them! |

You've had your answer about handling Steve....as long as your snake is happy and not stressed then you're doing a good job . And apologies for the slight thread hijack  ....

Very well said Herriotfan  !! I don't have anyone who refuses to come around but do have some friends who would be very uncomfortable, and would probably leave, if I got one of the snakes out. My husband does try to 'encourage' people to let him get them out  , but if I'm there I put a stop to it immediately.
My best friend was terrified of snakes, would even change the channel if they came on tv. She didn't want to pass that fear on to her kids so specifically asked me to get the snakes out when she was there with them. It started out with her sitting as far away as possible and the kids with me, happily stroking the snake....and over the following months she slowly moved closer until she can now sit next to me while I've got one out, but she still won't touch it and I would NEVER put any pressure on her to do so....it has to be in her own time and I'm so proud of how far she's come .
In the same way we want respect instead of ridicule for being snake lovers, so we must respect those who don't feel the same way as we do.

I know he's an awesome little guy Steve, but unfortunately not everyone agrees with us and we need to respect that. It is sad that you have one friend who won't even come to your house because you now have a snake  , but she is obviously very scared of them. With your other friends there is a bit of hope. Just don't put any pressure on them, try not to 'talk snake' too much , and in time they may begin to show an interest and you'll be able to get him out. But it has to be at their speed....and with total understanding from you for how they feel.
I'm so sorry about your son Mort. I've grown up with dogs and can't imagine being without them....despite being badly bitten as a kid. Hopefully it is something he will grow out of once he can try to rationalise that fear. It would definitely help if you knew someone with a calm, friendly dog who was willing to work with you AND your son in conquering his fear.
