OK well first I'll introduce myself and my snakes!!

Please go easy on me as I'm new to the forum! Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm Bramley and I am concerned about my (and my girlfriend's) corn snakes! They are Sock (AKA the windy man) and Toast. Windy man is an Anery, about 4 years old and somewhere over 4 foot. Toast is a caramel and is about 18 months old. I love them very much, as I am sure most of you on here will understand!

I have not had any health problems with them before, they almost always have perfect sheds and neither has ever turned down food. Their vivs are stacked one above the other (toast's is obviously smaller) and both are kept nice and clean and the temperatures are monitored daily. The warm ends of both vivs is kept at around 27-28 degrees, whilst the cool ends vary with room temperature at somewhere between 12 and 20 degrees. They are both fed roughly once a week. Windy man has a medium sized adult mouse and Toast has a fluff.

right so that's the background - sorry for the long rant!

Anyway I went away for the weekend and when I came back I got Windyman out for a wiggle, and noticed a 'loose' scale on top of his head! very odd, I had a really good look over him, especially around the vent and head areas, and there are no signs of mites or and other infection, respiratory or skin. He is behaving normally and seems quite happy. So I thought it might just be an injury where he's 'reversed' badly, and will fix itself next time he sheds.

But then when I got Toast out I was alarmed to find the exact same symptom!! again, no sign of parasites or disease, and he seems his normal lively self. I have done my best to get photographs of the issue:

Windy Man (Sock):

Toast:

Any ideas on what could have caused this would be much appreciated!! maybe it's to do with the cold weather? or too dry/humid in their vivs?

My apologies for such a long essay and massive photos!!

Thanks guys,

Bramley

How odd. It's almost as if they've both been rubbing that area on something but they're not in shed?
Then I wondered if it's because they're trying to get out to find a lady friend, with it being 'that' time of year. Maybe they've found a gap that they are pushing against.
The problem with both those ideas is the position of the loose scale. I would expect it to be on the end of the nose if it were down to rubbing for whatever reason.
I'm sure you've checked their vivs for anything they might be catching their heads on?
I wonder what other people think?

It's easier to show you!!

Here's the set up. as you can see, they've both got the resin-type hides but different sizes. I have never had a problem with these before. Windy Man also has a coconut half and a piece of bark I got from the reptile shop. They are just about to move into bigger vivariums (Toast will have Sock's one for the time being) as they are just about outgrown. should be this weekend all being well, the new larger viv is already in place.

forgot to mention, they're headed with standard mats, no lighting.

Windyman seems to have lost the loose scale altogether now, he must have rubbed it off.

I don't think they're in shed, I haven't noticed either of the going blue at all. (unless when I was away)

Seems the general consensus is this is a mechanical injury? but seem so odd that it should be the exact same scale when they've never hurt themselves before?!

Toast may have been rubbing along the air vents in the faunariun and caused damage that way but that still doesn't explain why Windy Man has an issue. It must just be coincidence.
Any remaining scale damage should come off with the next shed.
So you'll have a faunarium empty then, wonder what will go in there? !!!!!!!

Mine sometimes get this before a shed, could be the case here?

On another note, how does a 4ft+ snake fit under half a coconut, lol!

I hope that's all it is, or just a coincidence with them! I'll be keeping a close eye until their next sheds, even more than normal.

Thanks everyone for your help! Any more ideas/experiences are welcome

Oh and Windy Man just about fits under the coconut, god knows how! But for his comfort I usually put the cork bark or some or the foliage over the opening of it as it's just starting to lift up with him coiled in it, so he has a bit mroe room whilst still feeling secure and hidden. No idea how he gets in such a small space as he's not a small snake any more!! He used to fit through the tiny hole in the top of the nut, which is just hilarious now!

My first guess was that they had reversed and caught it but quite a coincidence that they've both got the same thing... Hopefully the next shed will sort it and it won't cause any problems.

I bet Windy Man looks like he's wearing that coconut as a hat or something! haha, they do like the most impossibly tiny spaces don't they.

Thanks Freddiesmum! They are so beautiful, We are very proud 'parents'!!

I will get some nice photos of them up soon...

Windy man does look very silly trying to hide under the coconut, but he seems to love it! I've offered him larger hides but it's his favourite for some reason, even though it doesn't really 'fit' him.
