I'm just about to take Bazilishka to the vets, for worming. I posted another thread on the health section some time ago - she had produced a strange poop, so I had it checked, and she's got flagellates. I read up on it, some people say the snakes don't need treating for those, and I was unsure, whether to put her through the stress of treating her, but decided to treat her, just in case, as the last poop was a bit wet again.
Am still a bit apprehensive, I hope I'm not putting her through unnecessary treatment and stressing her out. Also a bit worried about transporting her in this cold weather. She'll be in a little RUB, wrapped in towel, in a bigger box with luke warm water bottle. The vet said it should be ok like that - anybody has any experience with that? I'll pre heat the car as well.
I know I'm probably worrying too much, as usual, but I've never transported a snake in winter...

I can understand why you're worrying Petra, I would be the same, but it does sound as though you are doing everything you can to make sure she doesn't get cold during this trip. I've never had to transport my snakes anywhere, but know of people who have. My only comment would be that you could probably put her in a pillowcase in her RUB, she will feel safer that way. And also make sure that the RUB and the bigger box are VERY VERY well secured....you don't want her going walkabout in your car!
I'm glad you are getting her treated, not only is it good for her but it will also put your mind at rest.

Thank you , both, good idea with the newspaper, Scaly, it will be breathable as well.
I went to the vets this morning, just to drop off another sample and to make sure the reptile vet is in - and a man just brought in a 6 foot boa constrictor! In a bucket, wrapped in towels, with a hot water bottle ( no teddy bear in sight , though :-) )So got to see another snake, too :-). Am bit more reassured after talking to the vet, too. |

I know this doesn't help but I love the fact that everyone else seems just as neurotic about their snakes as i am about my snake! |

I'm back! Was scary but cool at the same time. She was a very good girl, nice and calm, took a bit of persuading to open her mouth, and then the vet just put the syringe right down in her throat ( WOW ) and she just swallowed the meds - and that was it - no fighting. She was calm all the time. She needs two more doses, so will have to come back, but I will need to do the last dose myself, as the vets are closed over the easter. The vet made it look so easy... they'll let me do the next one there, and supervise me.
I transported her in a 5 l RUB, bedded down with paper towels, and with lots of scrunched up paper towels ( thanks, Scaly :-) ) as well. Then I wrapped the RUB in a towel, and wedged it tight in a bigger box, which had been padded with another towel, and had a warm water bottle in there ( that kept the temps nicely at 24 C all the time, I was so paranoid, that I put a digi thermometer in with the RUB ). She's back in her viv now :-) |

Thanks everybody. TBH, I find it a bit daunting, the vet actually put the syringe about 1 inch down the snake's throat :-0 ! I can see why, he wanted to make sure, that if she wriggles or tries to spit it out, there's no way it'd get to her trachea - but it looked like threading Bazilishka onto a syringe! The vet was very gentle, and she never protested - so couldn't have been that bad. There will be a different vet tomorrow, though, and it will be me on the business end of the snake this time... |

I would find it daunting too, but the vet will be there and I know my vet would not ask me to do something if he didn't think me capable of doing so. Again good luck - I'm sure it will be fine |

Glad to hear it all went well, I would definitely find it daunting and always get nervous whenever something doesn't quite go to plan! Good luck with doing the syringing yourself. |

I'm so glad it went so well getting Bazilishka to the vet's and getting her treated .
I totally understand why you're so nervous about doing the treatment yourself, but as Blackcat said, a vet wouldn't get you to do something if they thought you weren't capable of it. I'm glad you'll get the chance to do it supervised today before you do it by yourself. Will you have anyone with you when you go to the vet's, who could then help you, if necessary, when you do it yourself?

Update: just come back from the vets again, this time doing it myself - it was harder, then I thought! Bazilishka knew, what to expect this time, and put up a decent fight. Firstly, I had a job holding her head, she's surprisingly strong and wriggly. Then she clamped her jaws shut, and no gentle manipulation would open them. When I managed to get the tip of the syringe in, she still wouldn't open her mouth fully, and all the tissues inside her mouth were dryish and sticky, so the syringe didn't pass down very well. Then, to top it all, she managed to put an S bend just behind her head. I couldn't get the syringe far enough. She then managed to dribble some of the mixture out of her mouth, so hope she didn't get any of it in her windpipe. I also noticed a small reddish bit in het mouth, the vet said it was a bit of haemorrhage - so now, of course, am worried about starting a mouth rot. And I have to do it all over again, on Saturday. She,s due a feed today, the vet said to feed her, but I wonder, whether to perhaps leave it, until all the treatments are finished, if she's got a sore mouth and possibly a throat - could the mouse drag infection in the sore bits, as it' being swallowed? Stressing again. |

Oh no, sorry to hear it was a bit stresasful! Personally if she's not well I would be tempted to avoid feeding, it won't harm her just to miss one feed as she's been eating OK up to now hasn't she? Plus like you say she may not want to if her mouth/throat are sore. Good luck again for next time Razee, will you get your patner to help you when you are at home? I wouldn't try to do it on your own if you can help it. xxx |

Thanks, smart bunny, hubby was holding her ( and will be on Sat ), but she's very difficult to hold, very strong. I will give the feed a miss, though she had the previous one with 12 days gap, as I don't feed in blue, but then again, she's over 2, so if she has to wait another 12 days, so be it. I wouldn't be comfortable forcing syringe down her throat and generally wrestling with her, knowing that she ate less than 48 h before. I just hope her mouth and throat will be ok, I don't want to cause her more damage then if she hasn't been treated, if that makes sense. :-(

I'm sorry it wasn't exactly successful at the vets Petra . I can't imagine doing what you're describing....but then you never know what you will have to do for your snakes and you have to step up for them because they're your responsibility. I used to be squeamish but now will happily brain and split the stomach of a mouse to get my little one to feed. I even beheaded her supper today !
I know it's daunting, but you have done it once and you can do it again. Don't worry too much about some of the medicine dribbling out, I'm sure that's taken into account with the dosage she's being given. And I'm also sure she can cope with a bit going down her wind-pipe. If the vet thought it would be an issue he wouldn't let you do it.
I'm glad you've made the decision not to feed her, it would be too soon after she'd eaten to then stress her. And, as you've said, she won't come to any harm missing another feed.
Just remember that this is for her own good, she needs you to do it....and you CAN do it.

Razee You know I am very new around here, but good luck for tomorrow - yup, Bazilishka is going to know what you are up to, but there is no way the vet would ask you to do it if you couldn't. Will be thinking of you both |
