Hello :) I'm SilverWings, I'm in the south west UK and today I acquired my first snakes which has finally fulfilled a childhood dream. I've loved snakes since I used to play with my aunts garter snakes as a 3 year old, but never before been able to actually get one. I've extensively researched snake care but I know the practicality of something is often vastly different to the theory, so I'll probably be asking a lot of questions in the early days o.O

I decided to go for adults, I wasn't confident enough to raise a baby, so meet Luna (3.5 ft female) and Diego (~4ft amel male). I've had them less than a day but can already tell Diego is totally laid back and doesn't really mind what you do, whereas Luna as a lot more feisty, and fancies herself a tree snake (she's quite the climber XD).

(Don't worry, the vivarium is set up a lot better than in this pic, it was taken just to show them off...)

As a side note, can anybody suggest what colour type Luna might be? I've compared her to numerous pictures online, the closest match I could find was a caramel, but I'm not certain. Unfortunately I have no idea what she looked like when she was hatched :s

Thanks for reading :)
~SW

HULLLOOOOO

Yep Luna looks like a Caramel to me :)

May I ask how big their viv is? if they're sharing you'll want it big enough so you can have a hide each at both ends (at least four in total)

Thanks for the welcome guys :p

It's a 3 foot viv, it came with them. The previous owner said they cohabit very nicely but I'm still going to keep a close eye on them. They have 2 hides at the moment, an exoterra cave and a log hide. They usually end up piling on top of each other... I've also got aspen substrate on the floor of the viv.

One of the hides and Diego in his tube;

Luna making her way up the plant and the other hide in the background;

They really could do with more hides, they're only snuggling up because they're competing for the best spot :)

Also if they're defo male and female they will very likely breed, and if you're not ready for it, it can be a bit challenging

I'm not trying to sound mean at all by the way

I'm not sure they will breed; the previous owner had them for a few years and they never bred for him. I'm hoping they don't, I certainly don't intend to encourage it, at least not for a few years yet XD Perhaps they just aren't compatible breeding-wise?

Yes, I have heard some horror stories o.O I have hopes that these will be fine, they've lived together for many years with no problems ^_^ I was warned to split them up when feeding because Diego in particular can get pretty excited, but hopefully won't be a problem *crosses fingers*

Hello and welcome.

No offence, the previous owner sounds clueless. A 3ft viv for 2 adults is no where big enough, neither is a 4ft I think. 3ft is the suggested size for 1 adult, so d near double that size for 2 if you want to keep them together. Yeah the previous owner may have not had any trouble but it seems like to me he may not have been able to spot and trouble.

Yes they will breed, may have not yet but they will if they are opposite sex and living together. So many people have been caught out with this. You've been given links to some good info.

I don't mean to sound like I'm grilling you.

A very special super, duper thanks for K :3

Don't worry, I do intend to do something about this ;) I saw an awesome setup for a pair of beardies once where they had two interconnecting tanks, one was set up as a desert and one a jungle, and they could go freely between the two. I'm mulling over something like this for my pair, perhaps one viv on top of the other, and one set up with branches and other climbing accessories since it's already clear they love exploring higher up. Certainly something I'll be looking to sort in the next month or so.

Hi and welcome :) As above - a 3ft viv is the minimum space required for 1 adult snake, nowhere near big enough for 2. I keep my yearling in a 4ft viv and she's only 3ft at the moment! Congrats on getting 2 lovely looking snakes, and I hope you find the advice on here helpful, not trying to scare you off lol!
