My son asked me if he could have a snake, he is fascinated by them the same as I was at his age, I instantly agreed and thought of the Corn Snake as I know they make ideal first snakes. I in the past have had 2 Garter Snakes and a Royal Python so I am not new to snake husbandry, but have a couple of questions about the Corn Snake.
We have just got ours, a stunning red Corn, it is about 15in long and a good eater, I was told it is male but don't know for sure as I have never had to sex these snakes, so if someone could tell me what to look for it would be fantastic.
The second question is what sort of life span are we looking at for one of these snakes, I know they grow to around 4ft long, but I am not sure how long I can expect it to live.
I am sure someone on here can answer these and any other questions I might have in the future.
Thank you all in advance,
Richard |

Oh - ignore my post in the welcome section asking what snakes you have then lol! Congrats on your corn :) They can live for up to 20yrs in captivity, and generally grow between 4-6ft long, the females tending to be larger. Sexing them is very difficult by appearance, some people say that scale counting can be accurate (someone else would have to tell you though, something to do with how many ventral scales from vent to tail tip) but usually people get them popped (if very young) or probed (if older) by someone experienced. Unless you are planning to breed I would just 'choose' a sex to assume they are lol!

The scale counting is no-where near accurate... BUT!! Saying that, I had mine probed and one turned out female and one male as I was hoping since I wanted to breed. Did the scale counting thing the they matched. If there's 59-70 scales Vent - Tail Tip then it's most likely female. If there's 70-80 scales Vent - Tail Tip then it's most likely male. My male has 78 scales between his Vent and his Tail Tip and my female only has 64.
Edited because I was thinking of another snake completely lol. I was thinking of when me and my friend were sexing his Boas, it's boas that have 130-160(female-male) and corns only have the above ranges lol. I double checked with my word document that I had saved in case I needed it |

If you've got a local reptile store near you they might sex your snake for you or some vets have a reptile vet. |
