I had a nasty experience with exo terro heat mats too - nearly fried my geckos!!

All of mine are 'cobra' mats, i believe. I've had no issues with them

Hmm, it seems nasty experiences with Exo Terra are more common than I thought... I thought maybe mine was a one off thing but if you had one too.

My exo terra was statted up no worries; one of the geckos decided to take a pooop on it and the mat reacted like it was acid or something!
Burned a lovely poo shaped hole through the substrate and in the bottom of the viv before i figured out where the smell was coming from

I have 2 non-descript mats from china and a pro-rep one. The Chinese ones I haven't had a single problem with, unstatted reach a max temp of 35*
When I got the first snake, she came with the pro-rep mat. I wasn't told anything about a stat and once I found out I checked the temps and it was shooting up into the 50*s! They are all now on stats so I don't have to worry no more!

See, I don't have mine on a Stat at the moment but I do have it under the viv. It's not inside the viv and it heats the viv to 30C max during the day, 27C at night. That's the hot side in the summer.

You are risking your snakes life and possibly your own using a mat underneath the wooden viv without a stat. It should not be underneath a wooden viv to start with but should be inside the wooden viv on the floor and MUST be used with an appropriate thermostat and digital thermometer

I've just replied on the other topic, I currently can't afford a stat as I need to buy a new viv to separate the 2 corns I currently have due to not being told to do so by the rep shop near me. They cohab fine but they are male and female.

All of mine are Ultratherm though ive used pro rep in the past and had no issues but ive found using the ultratherm mats with the habsitats the on/off stats may as well be pulse stats as the temps rarely budge so ive stuck with them

Well you are going to need to buy two stats really, (you could use one but not ideal) if you are going to be using two vivs. The fact that you are using a heat mat underneath a wooden viv is very dangerous. Your best option would be to get two RUBS or other brand tubs and put a corn in each then place the tubs so that they are both siting with some of the tub on top the heat mat with a stat attached to the heat mat. That way both corns can safely share the heat mat and the stat when it arrives . How old are these corns by the way?

i agree your heat mat really needs to be on a stat AND please remove the heat mat from under your viv that is a fire waiting to happen.
you should buy a stat before buying another viv.

When people sat they have no stat. We take it at face value, most people habit been told. But it is very frustrating when people ingnore advice which is life saving to you and your snakes. You are firstly co having obese snakes, which you are now separating which is the best thing to do. But if you have no money how are you going to house any offspring, feed them, take them to a vet if needed? I would personally seperate into two rubs on the dongle mat and buy a stat.

Firstly, both snakes are over 5ft and are no longer obese. They are now a healthy weight. Donnie has sent me a spare stat Hissyfit but if you are sure it would be really helpful for when I have the second viv?
The heat mat is between 2 pieces of Polystyrene as I was told that if my corns were the kind that like to move substrate(which they are) then I would be best putting the heat mat under the viv between 2 sheets of Poly to prevent fire. I have now been told that this could actually worsen the situation...
Georgina, the female isn't gravid. I have worked that out because the last time they locked was November last year and they haven't done since. She also hasn't changed her behaviour or anything. I have spare Bug Boxes for offspring but obviously I cannot fit a 5ft corn into a bug box.
They have plenty of food to last them until I can get them some more, AKA 20 weeks worth as I buy in bulk and they are on 1 large mouse every 2-3 weeks.
